Key Center Welcomes Military Families
Last week, Key Center Staff and students celebrated Blue Star Welcome Week. This exciting week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service. We identified themes for each day and invited students and staff to dress according to the theme. Per usual, our community did not disappoint. There was an abundance of camouflage, stars/sparkles, and superheroes on display all week long. Thank you military families!
Disability History and Awareness Month
In 2009, a committed group of youth with disabilities initiated a campaign to have Virginia officially recognize October as Disability History and Awareness Month (DHAM). The youth also developed a vision statement: “Disability history education and awareness will promote positive attitudes in schools creating a culture of mutual respect, understanding, and equal opportunities for all.”
Several groups collaborated on a variety of resources that can be used to promote and highlight DHAM in Virginia. These resources can be found at the following websites: Inclusion Project, Virginia Board for People with Disabilities (Training), A Life 4 Me, History of Disability, and PEATC Youth Advisory Board.
