Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

It was wonderful seeing so many of you at the Fall Family Picnic on Friday evening.  It was great to catch up with friends and to meet new families.  We hope you enjoyed the music, food and time to relax with our community under the fall sky.  Thank you to our PTA for organizing such a fun event for families and staff.

Today on our morning news show we talked about how education IS an actual super power!  Let’s use today, let’s use this week to FLY.  Students were advised if they are not sure what their super powers are or if they are wondering how to offset their “kryptonite” they should talk with their teachers today.  You too can help out students to: Get cape.  Wear cape.  Fly!!

There will be no school for students next Monday, October 9 while our staff will be engaged in their learning and additional time to plan for students.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett

ParentVue Accounts

Please set up your ParentVue account this week to have access to upcoming important school information.  The SIS ParentVUE account will allow you to login to  applications such as Schoology, MySchoolBucks, and Here Comes The Bus. The Federal Impact Aid Survey will be available via ParentVUE beginning October 16.   Once you have completed this account, you will not be able to login to other applications for 24 hours.  An overnight process uploads the SIS ParentVUE account to other applications.  Information about setting up this account can be found here.

Background on the ImpactAid program

The Federal Government owns property in Fairfax County, and those properties are removed from the local tax base.  FCPS is eligible to apply for Federal Impact Aid funds as reimbursement for the lost tax revenue.  Federally connected students are children of active-duty uniformed services personnel, children who live on federal property or in subsidized federal housing, and children whose parents are employed on eligible federal properties.

PTA Update

Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day on October 3

Join us on the Bike Train or walk to school on our next Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day on Tuesday, October 3!  The Bike Train departs Meadow Lane Park at 8:45 am.  Students may meet at Meadow Lane or join the Bike Train along the route.  If you have a student joining the Bike Train, please consider signing up to chaperone some of the rides!

If your student rides in the morning, please make sure they know how they are getting home in the afternoon and where they will meet you (at school, at home, or at Meadow Lane Park).  If they normally take the bus, you must inform the MRES office that they will be biking home (email jfheflin@fcps.edu).  Riders must have a helmet and be comfortable riding a two-wheel bike on neighborhood roads.  Please visit our Bike Train page for additional details.

Dining for Dollars at Panera

Join us at Panera on Wednesday, October 4, 4:00-8:00 pm.  Mention the code FUND4U and Marshall Road Elementary will receive 20% of sales in store, placed online at www.Panerabread.com or the Panera app.

Marshall Road Directory

We are delighted to announce that a new student directory will be available for the 2023-2024 school year, sponsored by the PTA.  The directory will be in PDF format and will contain information such as the names and emails of teachers/staff, student names, and parent/guardian emails.  The directory is exclusively for the private use of Marshall Road Elementary School families.  It cannot be reproduced, sold, or used for any commercial purposes whatsoever.

Having a student directory is a wonderful way to promote communication and community among parents and students, which has a variety of benefits for everyone involved.  For example, parents/guardians can facilitate playdates, send party invitations, and support extracurricular activities.

If you do not want your information or your student's information to be included in the directory, please return the Opt-Out form to the MRES front office by Friday, October 13. If you select the Comprehensive Opt-Out Option or the Limited Opt-Out Choice A your student’s information and your contact information will not be included in the student directory.

Science Share/STEAM Night

The PTA is partnering with the school to host a combined Science Share/STEAM Night at Marshall Road on February 1.  More information will be provided as we get closer to the event.

We wanted to let you know that Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) will be hosting their 11th annual Science Fair on March 16 and they invite all students in grades 5-8 in FCPS to participate.  Some Marshall Road 5th and 6th graders may want to use the projects/presentations they prepare for our MRES Science Share to present at the TJHSST Fair.  There is an interest session on October 6, 5:00-6:00 pm.  More information about the TJHSST Science Fair and interest session can be found here and a full guide to the Fair can be found here

Join us for Coffee with Principal Chapman & our next PTA Meeting!

Our next meeting will be hybrid on Wednesday, October 11 at 9:30 am.  Join us in person in the school cafeteria or virtually on zoom.  Enjoy coffee and light refreshments, hear from the PTA and Principal Chapman, and learn more about Advanced Academics at MRES from Christine Marucchi our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART).  Mrs. Marucchi will discuss the four levels of AAP, how teachers are addressing the talents of their students through enrichment and will also address questions or comments from the families in attendance.

If you are joining virtually, please use this zoom link

Meeting ID: 870 7770 0972

Save the Date: Bike/Walk to Breakfast

Please plan to join the Marshall Road community for Bike/Walk to Breakfast on Tuesday, October 17!   All MRES students and their families are invited to attend – with or without a bike!  Enjoy bagels, fruit, and coffee/juice, courtesy of the PTA, starting at 8:30 am on the blacktop.

This is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with other MRES families and students.  Please note that all children need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian at breakfast - do not send your child unsupervised.  Please consider signing up here to help with this event.

Get some exercise and work up an appetite by joining the MRES Bike Train before breakfast!  The Bike Train will depart Meadow Lane Park at 8:15 am and will bike to the MRES blacktop.
