Co-Ed Golf

Co-ed Golf Advances to Regional Tournament

The Woodson co-ed golf team earned a top 3 finish in Tuesday’s 18 hole Patriot District Tournament at Twin Lakes and by doing so advanced to next week’s regional tournament to play for the chance to go to the state championship. Woodson was well represented by Han Lee, Mark Heinz, Aurora Yoo, Jake White, Bobby Kay and Ethan Conklin. In weather conditions best described as “sloppy”, junior Han Lee and freshman Aurora Yoo both shot 4 over par and junior Mark Heinz 5 over par. White, Kay and Conklin all tied for the fourth qualifying score resulting in a team score of 319 compared to Robinson (310) and Fairfax (315).

Han Lee and Aurora Yoo both tied for 2nd place for individual medalist honors out of a field of 36 golfers.

Varsity Field Hockey Highlights

On Tuesday night, playing in an electric playoff atmosphere, the Cavaliers went to Fairfax and shut the Lions out 1-0. Ella Mathias fed Reese Cuviello on a penalty corner for the game winner. Julia Oleyar prowled the midfield, taming the Fairfax attack and coupled with Kelby Lennen to disrupt Fairfax penalty corner attempts. They were helped by booming hits from Ava Durosko, offensive pressure applied by Siena Niedrick, Amanda Lee, and Eva Lennon, and stellar goaltending from Molly Billingsley and AJ Ingson that caged the Lions’ attack.

The Cavaliers defeated West Potomac 5-1 on Thursday with goals from Ella Mathias, Julia Oleyar, Amanda Lee, Siena Niedrick, and Grace Hartley.

Please join us on Thursday night, October 5th to recognize the team’s seven seniors in a pre-game ceremony before our game vs West Springfield at 7:30pm.

Ice Hockey Club:

The Woodson Ice Hockey Club hosted its Evaluation Skate at the ST. James on Monday, September 25th.  27 skaters attended to demonstrate their skills for the volunteer coaches who dedicated their time to assist with the evaluations.

We hope the student body and staff come to cheer the team on at games this year!

FCPS NEWS & EVENTS

From the desk of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District:

Service Academy Nominations

For over two hundred years, the United States Service Academies have educated some of our nation’s finest leaders. Here in the 11th District, I am proud to say the acceptance rate into the academies is routinely among the highest in the nation. Nominating young Americans for an appointment to a service academy is among my most gratifying duties as a Member of Congress.

Applications for the Class of 2028 are being accepted by my District Office, and must be received by close of business, Friday October 6, 2023. Fully completed applications should be emailed to: VA11academyinbox@gmail.com

To assist me with selecting the most qualified candidates, I have formed Advisory Boards to interview prospective nominees. These boards are comprised of Academy graduates, former Academy admissions officers and/or career military officers. These interviews will be scheduled between mid-October and early December. Interviews will be scheduled only for those who have submitted complete application packages by the deadline.

You can visit the Academy Nominations page on my website for more information. Please click here for my Congressional Nomination Procedures, and here for the Application for Nomination.

I wish you the very best as you pursue a nomination to an Academy and begin your career as an officer in a branch of our military. If you have any questions, please contact my District Office at 703-256-3071.

Congressional Art Competition

Though this event will not take place until Spring of 2024, I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention as well. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.

I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio.  Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.

The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.

Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.

Congressional App Challenge

Congressional App Challenge

Deadline to apply - November 1

Congressman Gerry Connolly’s office is once again participating in the Congressional App Challenge and is inviting students in the district to register.

The Congressional App Challenge serves as an opportunity for high school students to be more engaged in coding in their district. Every year, Members of Congress challenge students in their districts to create and submit their original apps for a chance to win the Congressional App Challenge (CAC). Each challenge is district specific. U.S. Representatives publicly recognize their winning teams, and each winning app may be put on display in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year.

  • Winning apps are eligible to be displayed in the US Capitol Building and featured on the House of Representatives’ website, House.gov
  • Winning students are invited to #HouseofCode Capitol Hill Reception in Washington D.C.
  • Additional sponsor prizes TBA!

For more information, please visit: https://www.congressionalappchallenge.us/

To register, please visit: https://www.congressionalappchallenge.us/students/student-registration/

Our district’s 2022 winning app can be found here: https://www.congressionalappchallenge.us/22-VA11/

For more information and questions, please feel free to contact Fatima Malik at fatima.malik@mail.house.gov.
