A Note from the Principal
DRES Families,
It was great seeing many of our families and students last week at the Fairfax High School Family Fest and football game. We celebrated our military families this morning with some breakfast treats and refreshments. Thank you to our military families for the sacrifices they make to defend our country. We are looking forward to our annual field day next Friday, October 8th. See details below if you are able to volunteer. Also, we will host a meeting for families of current 2nd-6th grade students interested in learning more about full-time AAP services on Thursday at 6:30.
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released their School Quality Profiles last week. You can click here to view the full profile. DRES is fully accredited on all school quality indicators.
We also held our annual safety overview with our crisis management team. You can view his video to become familiar with FCPS safety/security terms.
If you have any questions or concerns you can contact our main office at 703-279-8400 or contact me directly at cmsmith@fcps.edu
Enjoy the weekend!

September Spotlight of Learning
Attendance Matters
Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.
When scheduling trips or family events, try to use weekends and school holidays, and refer to the FCPS Calendar when planning. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.
When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence to their school. Most schools have links to their attendance email or notification systems on their homepages. If you are unsure how to report an absence, please call your school’s front office.
Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!
Veterans Day Display
Do you have a family member that serves or has served in the US armed forces? Daniels Run will honor all active, reserves and veterans on Veteran's Day 2023. Click here. Your information will be written on a star and placed on a Veteran's Day bulletin board (inside the school building). Our Daniels Run students and staff will be excited to see their loved one honored and on display to the entire school. Thank you for your service. If you filled it out last year, you do not need to complete it again.

We depend entirely on volunteers to help us with the projects. We will be weeding and clearing English ivy from the understory of a forest.

Positivity Project (P2)
Dear Families,
Next week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Open-Mindedness. Open-mindedness means you like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions.
Open-mindedness is the willingness to actively search for evidence that goes against one’s favored opinions, plans, or goals. Open-minded individuals are able to weigh all evidence fairly, when it is available. They see the other side and fight the tendency to have a bias for their own views. And, rather than favoring the socially dominant views, they give attention to those that are less dominant.
Open-minded individuals are often good listeners and called upon to provide a balanced viewpoint. Both listening and the ability to deliver reasonable and practical advice are marks of good friends and confidantes. This strength helps individuals form meaningful and lasting relationships.
To practice and encourage the character strength of open-mindedness with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.
Have a wonderful week!
