Dear Dranesville Families:

I hope you are getting out to enjoy the pretty Fall weather. I was happy to get out this past weekend to see our very first middle school cross country meet. Herndon Middle School did a great job hosting eight schools. The boys and girls teams from each school competed in the meet and had hundreds of athletes running. I was so happy to see so many students have the opportunity to participate in this team sport. The team camaraderie almost brought me to tears as team members cheered each other on and ran alongside the course to bring in the runners. So often our children show us the right way to act in situations. Congratulations to any family participating in this. I was also happy to see so many parents, teachers, and principals on the sidelines.

My next stop was the Marching Band Competition hosted by Herndon High School. If you like music and drama, do not miss this annual event. The Herndon band parents did a great job once again hosting this huge event. The Herndon band students welcomed everyone and handed out the awards with style. Congratulations to all of the bands that competed. I was impressed by every show I watched.

The School Board has been hard at work to put our governance of the strategic plan in place. We have set up executive expectations for the Superintendent to use as she works to meet the goals of the strategic plan. We are reviewing the use of these expectations and the strategic plan goals at our work sessions and regular meetings so the public has a full view into how successfully the strategic plan is being implemented. All of this information feeds into the evaluation of the Superintendent that the Board does each June. The evaluation criteria for the Superintendent is driven by the Virginia Department of Education so all of our work will be mapped to those criteria. Some of this work was put in place by prior boards. We are in the process of revising it to fit the specific needs of our district now and to meet the goals of the strategic plan that we all had input to over the past school year. For example, we added an expectation around safety and security and added to expectations around family and student engagement and facilities management. All of the expectations can be found here in the the Strategic Governance Manual., and the strategic plan goals can be seen below and HERE. Our first review of a strategic plan goal will happen at our work session on November 14 when we review Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence. At the following regular meeting, we will discuss our progress toward that goal. I am happy to work on this as I believe this makes the strategic priorities of the district and its forward progress very transparent and accessible to the public.

We need to continue to talk to our children on the dangers of substance abuse. I have a few resources below- “Talk. They Hear You” program and the upcoming FRC webinars on how to talk to your 11th and 12th grader about drugs. The FRC webinars will be in English and in Spanish and will also share what substance abuse lessons they get in school. We all need to work together to keep our children safe from substance abuse as the opioid danger is still present in our community.

Kent Gardens/McLean Area Elementary School Boundary Adjustments

Final Comments on our boundary scenarios are due today! If you have any comments, please submit them on the online form today HERE

I want to thank all who have attended our community meetings on this topic and all of you that have already submitted comments. Our facilities and instructional staff have worked hard to get us to this point and have prepared 5 scenarios for your input. All of those scenarios and comments from previous meetings can be seen on this webpage

I do want to acknowledge that calling this work “Kent Gardens Capacity” solutions over the past year did not prepare other schools to pay attention to the potential impact on their communities. Several of the scenarios have significant impact on  Franklin Sherman ES neighborhoods, and they were surprised by this. Please do take the time to look at the maps to see how your neighborhood may be involved.

What happens next?

All of the input that has been given will be analyzed by our facilities and instructional staff and a recommendation will be forthcoming based on that. One of the scenarios may be chosen or sometimes an adjusted scenario is developed based on community comments.

Our proposed schedule moving forward is as follows:

November 20th Regular Meeting–Facilities staff will present a recommendation to the School Board.

November 30th Public Hearing–The community will have an opportunity to give comments to the School Board on the latest ideas for the boundary adjustment and the phasing.

December 4th Regular Meeting–The school board will vote on the final plan.

School year 2024-2025–The implementation of the plan will begin. It is likely there will be a phasing plan so the full implementation will take place over several years.

All in all, I hope you are doing well. This quarter seems to be going smoothly at the schools I have visited. Lastly, I want to extend huge thanks to the Langley HS Madrigals and the Forestville Cardinals Choir for singing the National Anthem at our school board meeting. They did an amazing job.

Happy Fall,

Elaine

The 2023-30 Strategic Plan

The 2023-30 strategic plan sets five main goals to create positive change in FCPS. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts. Each goal has an equity commitment and a set of measures that will be used to evaluate success.

Goal 1: Strong Start, Pre-K-12

Our first goal in the strategic plan is to help all students develop academic skills, curiosity, and a love for learning. These skills and attitudes are crucial for success from pre-K to 12th grade. Our related equity commitment is to ensure authentic and affirming partnerships with families and key stakeholders through collaborative decision-making that results in each student's success.

Visit FCPS' Strategic Plan webpage to find out how we will measure the success of Goal 1.

Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered

Goal 2 states that every student will be part of a school community that cares for their health, well-being, and opinions. We will listen to students and use their input to guide our decisions. We will respect their individuality, identity, and experiences. We will make sure they feel safe and supported at school.

Visit the Strategic Plan webpage to learn more about how we will measure the success of Goal 2.

Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence

Under Goal 3, every student will learn to use critical and creative thinking. They will meet or exceed academic goals. Students will reach their full potential.

Visit the Strategic Plan webpage for more information. Watch this video to learn about the many voices that came together to create the plan.

Goal 4: Equitable Access and Opportunity

Under Goal 4, high-quality academics will be available to all students. They will have access to excellent resources that support their success. Visit the Strategic Plan webpage to learn more about how we will measure the success of Goal 4.

Goal 5: Leading for Tomorrow's Innovation

Under Goal 5, every student will graduate ready to thrive in life after high school with the skills they need to navigate, adapt, and innovate for a sustainable future. Using data gathered from students, we will ensure they are ready for a wide variety of options for their futures.

Visit FCPS’ Strategic Plan webpage to learn more about how we will measure the success of Goal 5.

Superintendent Reid's Updates

Opening of Schools Report

Dr. Reid recently presented the School Board with an "Opening of Schools" report during the September 14 Board Meeting. Please see this video and the accompanying presentation slides to learn more.

Compensatory Education Update

At the September 14 Regular Meeting, Dr. Reid presented an update on the COVID 19 Compensatory Education Plan. She shared that FCPS has held more than 30,000 IEP and Section 504 meetings to consider whether students require compensatory services and/or reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses and has provided more than 27,000 compensatory services hours to students and is processing payment of more than $5.5 million in reimbursement to families for private services. See the presentation materials here and watch the recording of the presentation.

Reading by Grade 3 through the Equitable Access to Literacy (EAL) Plan

At the September 28 Regular Meeting, Superintendent Reid provided an EAL update including the desired outcomes and 5 year Action Plan for continuous improvement of the Four Focus Areas:

  • Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
  • Equitable and Culturally Responsive Practices
  • Professional Learning
  • Families and School Partnership

The presentation outlined the 2022-2023 Phonics Gains By Student Group which reflected increases in percentage of predictably long-standing and persistent achievement gaps that were narrowed through foundational skill instruction in the primary grades and intervention in the upper grades last year. See the presentation materials here.

Projects Funded by Recent School Bonds

Thanks to the support of Fairfax County citizens who approved the 2019 and 2021 bond referendums, projects have been funded at Armstrong, Bonnie Brae, Braddock, Bren Mar Park, Brookfield, Crossfield, Dranesville, Fox Mill, Herndon, Hybla Valley, Lees Corner, Louise Archer, Mosaic, Oak Hill, Wakefield Forest, Washington Mill, and Willow Springs, elementary schools; Cooper and Frost middle schools; and Centreville, Falls Church, Justice, Madison, and West Potomac high schools. Follow the status of FCPS capital projects for updates on renovation projects.

Not only do our facilities wear out over time, but they also become outdated, from both a technological and instructional standpoint. FCPS renovates its schools to ensure that students across the division have high quality, effective learning environments.

The 2023 Bond Referendum will be on the ballot in November. Vote on Tuesday, November 7. Learn about registering to vote.

attendance photo with facts on missing school

Students Are Learning Every Day

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When scheduling trips or family events, try to use weekends and school holidays, and refer to the FCPS Calendar when planning. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence to their school. Most schools have links to their attendance email or notification systems on their homepages. If you are unsure how to report an absence, please call your school’s front office.

Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information.

When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher, so that assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent. Review health and safety guidance for schools to stay up to date on the best ways to prevent the spread of disease, and for information on when students should stay home from school.

Free COVID-19 Tests

Every U.S. household can place an order to receive four more free COVID-19 rapid tests delivered directly to their home.

Make a SUBstantial Difference!

FCPS is always looking for kind and caring substitute teachers. Weekly virtual substitute teacher information sessions are held each Wednesday from 2 to 3pmRegister for an upcoming session on October 11.

Did You Know...

Edible THC products take longer than smoked marijuana to have an effect. Smoking takes just seconds to minutes. But a THC edible typically takes 30 to 60 minutes after being eaten and digested. The peak effect happens 3 to 4 hours after ingesting. Someone experimenting with THC edibles might not feel the effects as quickly as expected. They might ingest large amounts to try to "get high." This leads to overdosing. Here is more information on the dangers of Marijuana edibles.

FCPS safety Tip Line logo

Gun Safety and Safe Gun Storage

Providing students and staff with a safe educational environment remains our top priority. Sadly, gun violence continues to impact schools and communities across our nation. As you may be aware, lessons on gun safety are already built into our curriculum. However, parents and guardians, it is critical that you talk to your children about the importance of gun safety and safe gun storage in your home, and in any home that your children may visit.

Our website has gun safety resources as well as detailed information about FCPS safety and security practices in our buildings.

Fairfax County Red Flag Law

Remember, you can also aid in preventing acts of violence. ESRO, commonly referred to as the “red flag law,” went into effect in July 2020 and is one of the ways we can all help prevent acts of violence. The law prevents individuals who show signs of being a threat to themselves or others from purchasing, possessing, or transporting any kind of firearm.

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

School Grounds Reminder

Please remember, we love your pets, but they are not allowed on school property due to allergies and cleanliness.  This includes weekend outdoor activities, walking along school pathways, and the school track.  Thank you for your understanding!

Message From Student Representative to the Board

Hi everyone,

I hope your school year is going well!

My name is Rida Karim, and I will be serving as your Student Representative for the 2023-24 school year. Last year, I had the privilege of being a part of the Student Equity Ambassador Lead program (SEALs), where I served on the Access to Technology Committee. During our involvement, we identified a critical issue - the lack of STEM opportunities for the youth. In response, we took action and established an organization called Technology Youth Empowerment, or TYE.

TYE's primary mission is to bridge the gap in STEM education for elementary schools in our county that may not have the same opportunities as others. Our dedicated team has been visiting these schools to promote STEM education, covering a wide range of topics, from computer science to physics to Engineering.

We believe that the impact of our initiative can be greatly expanded with the involvement of representatives from different high schools who share our passion for STEM education. That's why we are excited to invite you to join us in this meaningful journey.

We are currently seeking enthusiastic individuals who are willing to dedicate their time and expertise to teach STEM education at the elementary school level. Your role as a representative will be instrumental in inspiring and empowering young minds to explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

If you are interested in becoming a part of TYE and making a positive impact on the education of our community's youth, please let me know by sending me a note through the “Submit a Question” feature on the School Board’s website.  I can then send you further information. The application deadline is October 11, 2023. Should you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Your inquiries are always welcome, and I would be delighted to provide any clarification or guidance.

Warm regards,

Rida

Virginia House of Delegates and Senate Page Programs

The Virginia House of Delegate and Senate are now accepting applications for their Page Program. The application deadline for the House of Delegates Page Program is Monday, October 16, 2023, at 5 p.m., and the deadline for the Senate Page Program is Friday, October 20, 2023, at 5 p.m. Find more information about the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate Page Programs on the Capital Classroom website.

House of Delegates Page Program

The House Page Program focuses on civics education, the lawmaking process, and leadership development. As non-partisan staff of the House Clerk’s Office, Pages are an integral part of an institution with a long-standing tradition of providing outstanding support and customer service to state legislators and those they represent.

Each year, the Speaker of the House of Delegates appoints 13 and 14-year-olds from across the Commonwealth to work in the House Clerk’s Office as House Pages during the Regular Session of the Virginia General Assembly. They assist the Delegates and staff in the House Clerk’s Office in performing a wide variety of daily duties required for the successful operation of the House.

Senate Page Program

The Senate Page Program also appoints 13 and 14-year-olds from across Virginia. Similar to a college preparatory program, the Senate Program combines organized learning activities with day-to-day duties servicing the legislature.

The mission of the Senate Page Program is to facilitate a structured environment in which young Virginians accept responsibility and accountability, develop professional characteristics through strict standards of conduct, and engage in the legislative process through work, observation, and discussion.
