Specialist Spotlight: Literacy

Virginia Literacy Partnerships

Welcome to a new school year, families! You may be familiar with some of the shifts that we are experiencing in FCPS as we embrace reading research and best practices for teaching all students to read. As students learn to read, there are two major skills that they must develop: the ability to read the words on the page, and the ability to listen to and understand language. These two skills combine to develop reading comprehension, which is a child’s ability to understand what they read.

How can you support reading comprehension at home? There are two useful strategies that you can use with your child any time they read independently or you read together. When reading at home, ask and answer questions such as what, how, and why. Then, work together to determine the main idea of what was read. To help determine the main idea, ask yourself, “What is this mostly about?”. These two strategies for thinking about reading help students to remember more of what they read, and therefore they learn more from what they read. Watch this short video from The Meadows Center called “Helping Your Kid With… Two Useful Strategies to Improve Reading Comprehension” for more information about using these comprehension strategies at home with your young readers.

Happy Reading!
