Powell Families,
Please plan on showing your Puma Pride TONIGHT for the Centreville Homecoming Parade from 5:00 pm and help us create a sea of Pumas along the parade route! Our SCA and Safety Patrols will be marching in the parade with our administrative team and several staff. We would love to see many of our Puma families cheering us along!
We also hope to see everyone TOMORROW from 11:00-1:00 in our school parking lot for a FREE COOKOUT hosted by Impact Church. The Fairfax County Police and Fire Departments will be here with a patrol car, ambulance and fire truck for the children to explore. They also will have a bouncy house which is always a hit with our Pumas! All are invited to this fun event to kick off the school year and, if able, please bring a dish to share that would serve 6 people.
It sure is a fun weekend to be a Puma! We hope to see YOU at these exciting events!
Your Proud Principals, Jamie Luerssen, Hope Song & EJ Cho
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.
Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6), Middle School (7-8), and High School (9-12). Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction. Your teacher will inform you of the dates of the lessons.
Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology. Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.
Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or fle@fcps.edu.
All schools in FCPS offer a continuum of advanced academic services at the elementary school level. Colin Powell ES provides the whole continuum of services, including the full-time program in grades 3-6. AAP services provide challenging learning experiences for students that build on individual strengths and optimize abilities. Thank you to those who attended our September 13th parent night to learn about AAP. Please take a look at another additional in-person parent night option below and mark your calendar.
Wednesday, October 11th, 6pm in the Library
Topic: What is full-time AAP screening? How is my child screened for full-time AAP services?
Audience: Parents of students grades 2-6

Parents and guardians that visit during lunch, please take a moment to review these important reminders:
- Due to the limited seating, as well as assigned seats in some classes, please allow all students to be seated before sitting at a table with your child. At times, there may not be extra seating for parents and guardians and we appreciate your understanding if and when this occurs.
- Parents and guardians are welcome to eat while visiting in the cafeteria, and while at lunch please help our cafeteria attendants and school staff by assisting all students in the class, as needed. This might be to retrieve a forgotten fork, napkin or ketchup or simply open something for a student.
- For safety and accountability of our students, students may only leave the cafeteria or go to the bathroom if school staff give permission. If a student asks a parent or guardian, please ask the child to continue to raise their hand so school staff can address their need.
-
Outside (restaurant) food is not permitted during lunch. Please do not bring these items for your child.
-
Students may only pass through the lunch line one time. Once seated, please do not permit students to leave their seat to return to the line for additional food, drink or lunch items.
As always, as questions arise please don’t hesitate to ask the cafeteria hostesses for clarification. Together we can do this!
What it is: Students who choose to participate will paint a fake pumpkin to look like a character from a book, preferably one that we have in the Powell library so that it can be displayed with the pumpkin. The pumpkins will be displayed in the library and CPES staff members will judge the contest. First, Second, and Third place winners will receive a gift certificate for our Fall book fair, which will be the last week of November.
Contest Guidelines:
- Students may use any size pumpkin as long as it is a fake pumpkin (plastic, styrofoam, etc.). Real pumpkins will rot and damage the books.
- The pumpkin must be made to look like a character from a book we have in our library.
- Students may paint and attach items to make ears, beaks, limbs, etc. to create their character.
- Pumpkin displays must be no bigger than 24”x 24”.
- The student's name and homeroom teacher must be written on the bottom of the pumpkin. If a group of students works together, include all names and put a star next to the student it should be returned to.
-
Pumpkins must be in the library by October 25th to participate in the contest. They will be sent home the week of November 13.
TJ Investigative Science Outreach, a student-led organization at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, will be hosting the 11th annual science fair on March 16, 2024 and invites 5th-8th grade students to participate. Admission to the science fair is completely free.
Participants will complete a research project of their choice and present at the fair in-person on March 16, 2024. Students will receive help preparing for this fair through multiple sessions at TJHSST to teach them important skills in STEM like brainstorming, collecting data, presenting, writing an experiment summary, using statistics, creating an experimental diagram, etc.
The first interest/brainstorming session is Friday October 6th, 2023 at 6:00 pm. They will be holding this session in-person at TJHSST. During this session they will go over the goals and guidelines of this fair and introduce students to a multitude of project ideas. The Powell PTA is gearing up for an exciting event this fall: a Walk-a-Thon. Throughout the month of October, students can collect flat-rate pledges from family and friends. We will celebrate these donations with a free, community Walk-a-Thon on Saturday, October 28th from 10:30am to 12:30 pm. All students, families, & staff members are welcome to participate in the Walk-a-Thon even if they do not collect pledges. Donate by clicking on this LINK. Share the link with family and friends. The class and grade level with the most pledges win a class/grade party!
When we reach 400 members, our principals will wear these lovely costumes around the school! We are halfway there! Remember PTA membership needs to be renewed every year. https://powell.memberhub.com/
