What is RTL?

RTL stands for Return To Learn.  On a rotating basis, based on Black Days, all students will return to a particular class period for remediation, intervention and work completion.  When the calendar refers to RTL 2, that means during the 4th period (Panther Time) all students will return to 2nd period.

What is SEL?

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an FCPS standard (driven by VDOE) to help students beyond school life and prepare them for “the real world”.  All FCPS schools participate in SEL.  Cedar Lane has been teaching SEL for years now, as our students benefit from its lessons very well.  SEL at Cedar happens on specific Mondays, and is tied into our RTL schedule.  For more information on the SEL in FCPS, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/social-and-emotional-learning-sel.

Hearing and Vision Screening

Cedar Lane is conducting Hearing and Vision screenings in October.  All 10th graders and selected 11th graders (who missed the testing last year) will be screened.  Screening occur on 10/3 and make ups on 10/10.

SAT/PSAT Day

On October 11, 2023 Cedar Lane will administer the PSAT and SATs.  9th Graders will not report to school.  10th Graders will take the PSAT and 11th Graders will take the SAT.  If you have a 12th grader and want them to take the test at Cedar, it is free of charge.  More information will be coming as will Opt Out information.

Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS) Introduction

Each school pyramid has a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS) assigned to provide substance abuse prevention, education, and intervention services. Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists are part of the FCPS Office of Student Safety and Wellness. Like school social workers, school psychologists, and school counselors, we do not provide treatment services, but we support students while they are in the buildings.Key roles of a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist:

  •             Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug education for students, parents, staff, and the Fairfax County Community
  •             Intervention services upon violation of the Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook or suspected substance use involvement
  •             Assessing a student’s level of substance use and, if appropriate, making referrals to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board for additional services or other community resources as appropriate
  •             Group and individual interventions for students and in addition prevention services for students, staff, parents, and the Fairfax County community
  •             Most importantly, building positive relationships with students to provide support and encouragement
