NEW News
1. Message from Mr. Greata
Dear Woodson Community,
Our student leaders have been busy leading efforts not only here at Woodson, but across Fairfax County. It is inspiring to see our students exhibit their ability to work as a team, think creatively, and infuse school spirit as they plan our activities, contribute to the direction of our school system, and celebrate staff and students!
Today, we held our annual Hey Day, which is an event that provides all students with a chance to explore 55+ student clubs and groups that are available for student participation. In turn, the clubs raise funds by selling food and share the mission of their club with other students. Hey Day also features our annual staff/student basketball game, which was won this year by…the staff!
Hey Day is a huge event, involving the entire school, which was planned, marketed, and run by our leadership students. The Hey Day Committee was led by chairs Polly Muniz, Nicole Johnson, and SGA Officer Finlay Monette. Thank you to the leadership teachers Dan Schaeffer and Krissy Schnebel for all of their hard work as well!
On Thursday, we sent our four delegates Shaheera Kamin, Cara King, David Freeman, and Miranda Baxter to the inaugural meeting of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council (SAC). The SAC is a county wide council that provides a forum for students to provide feedback to our Superintendent. Thank you for being the voice of Woodson!
Woodson was also recently represented at a county meeting by Ruth Abebe, Courtney Butts, Daniela Cossio-Menacho, Rida Karim and Zara Kepler, our Student Equity Ambassador Leads (SEALs), at the SEALs Kick off event last week. These student leaders attended this event alongside SEALs from schools across Fairfax County to connect and kick off the new year. One of the guest speakers for the event was our very own, Rida Karim. We are so proud of these extraordinary students!
Looking ahead to Monday, October 2nd, we will be observing Custodian Appreciation Day and celebrating our staff that work so hard to take care of us. I am hoping everyone will get a chance to say thank you to a custodian next week.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr. Greata Acting Principal WoodsonConnect@fcps.edu

2. October 2 is National Custodian Appreciation Day
FCPS employs more than 1,300 custodians, field custodians, and building supervisors to maintain more than 28 million square feet of infrastructure. Woodson High School itself has over 20 custodians that help maintain our building on a daily basis. We wouldn't have a clean, safe place to learn, teach, and work if it wasn't for them. Thank you to our colleagues on the custodial team!
3. Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Introduction
Each school pyramid has a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS) assigned to provide substance abuse prevention, education, and intervention services. Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists are part of the FCPS Office of Student Safety and Wellness. Like school social workers, school psychologists, and school counselors, they do not provide treatment services, but they support students while they are in the buildings.
Key roles of a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist:
- Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug education for students, parents, staff, and the Fairfax County Community
- Intervention services upon violation of the Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook or suspected substance use involvement
- Assessing a student’s level of substance use and, if appropriate, making referrals to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board for additional services or other community resources as appropriate
- Group and individual interventions for students and in addition prevention services for students, staff, parents, and the Fairfax County community
- Most importantly, building positive relationships with students to provide support and encouragement
For general questions about the FCPS Substance Abuse Prevention Program, please contact the Office of Student Safety & Wellness at: (571) 423-4270.

7. Woodson Drama's Fall Drama - The Trials!
Check out Woodson's Fall Drama – The Trials!
Dawn King's new drama The Trials has been called - 'Chillingly compelling... convincing and urgent… combines the spirit of Margaret Atwood's speculative fictions with shades of Lord of the Flies... a play that demands self-reflection and soul-searching beyond the auditorium'' The Trials offers an outlet for conversation with students around the climate crisis. It asks key questions - without providing easy answers - about who is responsible, what can be done, and how do we define justice?
October 6th-8th and October 13th
Tickets start at $5 and can be purchased by clicking this link or at wtwdrama.org
