Glasgow Parents and Community:
Greetings! On Saturday my son participated in another session with First Tee, which he was very excited about! Today we are relaxing as a family and doing a lot of adulting as we get ready for the week! I hope everyone in the community is doing well.
We completed our first week of After School this past week. As a reminder, any student wanting to stay after school needs to have a parent register them for the after school program. Once registered, students must sign up during their lunch period for any activity they would like to participate in. Here’s the link to register your student(s). Capital One Coders: Capital One and FCPS are once again partnering to bring Coding back to Glasgow. If you’re interested in participating, please contact Ms. James acjames@fcps.edu or Mr. Williams gwilliams2@fcps.edu for interest or any questions you may have. The deadline is Friday, September 22, 2023. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. Please continue to reach out to your child's teachers throughout the quarter to check on their progress. Also, if you missed the last PTA Meeting, here is the recording.
From September 15 to October 15, FCPS recognizes and celebrates the histories and cultures of the members of our community who trace their heritage to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Learn more about National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Humbly,

The After-School Program
The After-School program is off to a nice start. We have a variety of clubs and activities that are active. If you’re interested in the clubs and activities, please visit https://glasgowms.fcps.edu/student-life-activities for the daily schedule and descriptions.
Open Art Studio: Students interested in working on art projects for their current art classes are invited to come and work on their assignments. Students who are interested in working on drawing and basic sculpture skills are invited to come to Open Art Studio. There will be tutorials on various techniques depending on individual student interests. Students may bring personal sketchbooks to practice skills or drawing paper will be available. Students may choose to work on stop motion animation with their phones during the after school Open Art Studio. If you are interested in participating, select ‘Academic Support with Teacher’ and select Ms. Schickel as the Teacher. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Schickel JMSchickel@fcps.edu
Chess Club: This year we will be holding a chess club Tuesday & Wednesday afternoons between 2:30 and 3:30 PM. All skill levels are welcome, and beginners are encouraged to attend.
After mastering the rules of the game, beginners will learn major tactical themes, opening principles, common checkmating patterns (rook & queen vs. king, rook & king vs. king, etc.), and algebraic notation (how to record your moves to review later). Intermediate and advanced players will gain experience with more advanced tactics (zugzwangs, underpromotion, smothered mates, etc.) and deepen their knowledge of opening theory.
There will also be time for open play and game review each session. Dedicated members will have opportunities to participate in tournaments sponsored by Appian Board Games, US Chess Association and the After School programs in Fairfax County. Please feel free to reach out to Mr. Bulman at Cdbulman@fcps.edu with any questions.
In the After School Program, we aim to support students’ needs and interests. If your student is interested in starting a new after school club, please come see Mr. Williams.
Schedule/Course Change Requests
At this time, all requests for schedule/course changes have been reviewed and those that could be accommodated have been made. If counselors could satisfy a request and a schedule change was made, students and families were notified of the change and start date. Our school’s schedule is built around the course requests that students make in the spring. Typically, the opportunity to make changes in the fall to student schedules is limited. This year, satisfying change requests was even more challenging. We do appreciate your understanding if we were unable to accommodate your request.
World Language Credit Exam
November 9, 2023 Glasgow will host the World Language Credit Exam. The exam is designed to assess students’ native language proficiency and enable them to earn one to three credits toward fulfilling the world languages requirement for the Advanced Studies Diploma, see more information on the credit exam website. The registration window opens on Tuesday, September 5, at 8 a.m. and closes on Thursday, October 5, at 4 p.m. for more information about the exam and the registration process, your student should speak with their school counselor:
Signs of Suicide Program for Seventh Grade Students
This year school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help. This year, Signs of Suicide will be addressed in all 7th Grade Health Classes on October 16th and 17th.
SOS has been used by thousands of schools for over 20 years. Studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students’ self-reported suicide attempts.
Through the program, students learn:
- that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
- how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
- to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
- who they can turn to at school for help
Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening form. This form cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should seek help from a mental health professional.
We encourage you to visit www.mindwise.org/parents for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn.
Included is an Opt-Out Request Google Form. If you do not want your child to receive the SOS lesson in Health class, complete this form, and have your child submit it to their Panther Time teacher.
If you would like to view the presentation in its entirety, please fill out this Google Form. We will be holding a virtual viewing session on September 26 at 6pm.
StudentVue and ParentVue
All FCPS students have a Student Vue account. All student schedules are active and up to date in SIS Student Vue and SIS Parent Vue. If you do not have a SIS Parent Vue account, we strongly encourage you to sign up for an account. You can find directions on how to do so at this link: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/student-information-system-sis-fcps/sis-parent-account-registration. Once you have signed up for an account, you’ll need an activation code - which we will work as quickly as we can to provide to you. You can find a video that provides information on how to use SIS Parent Vue and all that you will be able to access with your account here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLwkkemipws.
Health Information and Emergency Care Forms
The Health Information Form (HIF) (SS/SE -71) Health Information Form and the Emergency Care Information form (SS/SE-3) Emergency Care Information provide valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHNs) utilize the information contained in the HIF to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health Related Needs.
For SY 23-24, these forms will be required for all students. Parents/guardians may submit these forms either through electronic submission accessed within the weCare@school (weCare) module.
🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School
Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.
Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher, so that assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

🤧 Tips to Stay Healthy
Flu season is quickly approaching and communicable diseases continue to be present in our schools. Families and staff are encouraged to follow the health practices below to prevent the spread of illnesses and help keep our schools safe:
- Make an appointment to get a flu vaccine as soon as possible. Everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine (with rare exceptions). Flu vaccines are widely available at doctors’ and pediatricians’ offices, grocery stores, and pharmacies.
- Get vaccinated against COVID-19 if you have not done so already. As of Tuesday, September 12, updated COVID-19 vaccines are approved for use among those aged 6 months or older for the 2023-24 season. Find out where you can get a COVID-19 vaccine or booster in your community by visiting Vaccinate Virginia, or calling 877-VAX-IN-VA or 877-829-4682. Note: Flu vaccines and COVID vaccines can be provided in the same appointment.
- Check with your student’s healthcare provider to make sure they are up to date on their required school entrance immunizations. Immunization records can now be updated in SIS ParentVUE through the Online Verification Update form.
- Check for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. If a child is sick, please keep them home and get them tested for COVID-19 to stop further spread from occurring. Additional guidance on when to keep your child home due to symptoms and illness is available on the FCPS Attendance webpage. FCPS employees are also advised to stay home and get tested when feeling sick.
- Don’t forget to wash hands regularly, avoid touching the face with unwashed hands, cover the mouth when coughing or sneezing, and limit the time children spend in large group settings with contagious individuals whenever possible.
The most up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 school health practices is available on the Health and Safety Guidance webpage.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our schools safe and healthy.
Kiss and Ride
We have many families who choose to drop off and pick up students each day from school. We ask that all families use the kiss and ride line for student drop off and pick up. To keep the flow of traffic moving along and to maintain safety, we ask that you pull your cars up and stop at the locations our monitors direct to before allowing your child to exit your vehicle. Please be sure students are ready to exit cars with all their things out of car doors that exit onto the sidewalk. Please wait for the car in front of you to pull forward before you begin to depart. We also ask that you refrain from parking in the kiss and ride line or double parking in the lane. If you need to enter the building, please find a parking spot to park in our lot – do not double park in the parking lot or drop students off in the parking lot. Cones will be placed in the first two lanes of the parking lot to close off traffic and prevent families from dropping off students in the lot. Thank you so much for your cooperation.
