Floris Families,

Happy Friday the 13th!

Great week with learning opportunities all week, starting with the staff development on Monday. As part of the staff development, we completed our annual review of our Safety Plan and participated in various scenarios to help staff practice and problem solve to further enhance safety protocols.

We again remind parents that you must have your government issued photo ID to check-in at the main office each time you come to school during school hours and when you come to pick up your child early.

Please see below for details about our Annual Harvest Parade happening at the end of the month.

Next week is Digital Citizenship Week, October PTA Meeting on Wednesday and the PTA Bingo Night on Friday. Lots of fun!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Solar Eclipse Resources for Families

FCPS has created resources for families to learn more about the upcoming solar eclipses (October 14, 2023 and April 8, 2024) have been compiled, including safe viewing practices. FCPS website link provides resources that are applicable to students of all ages. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon.

Salad Bar Location Change

FCPS is making a shift in the elementary schools to place the  Salad Bar on the serving line. Floris ES will make this shift on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. Below is some information about this change.

  • The physical standing Salad Bar in the dining room will be discontinued, and all meal options will be offered from the serving line.
  • All students who are eating school lunch will be able to choose from salad greens, three additional vegetables and three fruits.
  • Students will also have two protein choices on the salad bar each day. Students can use the protein to create a salad bar entrée or add a small amount to go with their fruit and vegetables.
  • The salad bar menu will continue to be posted at the lunch line and will be available to the school community at the FCPS Nutrislice link.
  • Students will continue to have one hot entrée(s) choice available, and all fruits and vegetables will be served on the salad bar.

Food and Nutrition Services is making the shift of the salad bar back into the serving line is to allow schools to use the refrigerated sections that already exist (saving energy), saving space in the cafeteria dining room section, and to hopefully reduce waste with dropped food.

October 16-20 Observances

Next week is a very busy week which is focused clearly on safety.

October 16-20 is America’s Safe Schools Week, Digital Citizenship Week, and National School Bus Safety Week.

School safety includes keeping campuses free of crime and violence, improving discipline, and increasing student attendance. Schools that are safe and free of violence, weapons and drugs are necessary to ensure the well-being of all children and the quality of their education. The National School Safety Center, state governors and state school superintendents sponsor America's Safe Schools Week. This observance is also actively supported by local, state, and national public officials and professional organizations.

While digital citizenship is an ongoing topic integrated throughout the school day, Digital Citizenship Week is a time when specific skills are highlighted to help our students learn to use devices safely, ethically, and effectively.  Look for more information with specific resources and supports to partner with us on this!

National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program and an excellent way for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators, and other interested parties - to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety.
