Principal's Message

ww

Hello Shrevewood Families,

It is hard to believe that we are finishing the fifth week of school already. There are not enough words to share our gratitude for how hard the Shrevewood staff are working to provide meaningful learning opportunities for our students each day. The smiles on the faces of our students say it best!

Next Thursday, we will host our first Parent Coffee of the school year. We look forward to the conversations as we partner together this year. Also, next Wednesday is our first Dining for Dollars event at Five Guys in Falls Church. Take the night off from cooking dinner and enjoy a dinner at Five Guys to help support our school. More details ono both of these events can be found below in the newsletter.

Please remember that Monday (9/25) is a holiday and all FCPS schools and offices are closed. May all in our Jewish community observing Yom Kippur have an easy and meaningful fast.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Parent Coffee

As we are in full swing in the new school year, please join Mr. DeSmyter, Mrs. Vandawalker, and members of our staff for coffee and conversation on Thursday, September 28, at 10:00 a.m. in the Library. Our focus will be around supporting the social and emotional learning of all students, but we welcome additional questions around different topics as well. All parents and caregivers are welcome! As part of Blue Star Welcome Week, we also want to welcome and recognize our military affiliated families to our school community.

Picture Day! October 3rd

Our Picture Day is scheduled for Tuesday, October 3rd. Below is the information about ordering photos. We will also send information home in Thursday folders next week.

If your child is absent, there will be a make-up day on November 13th (note that the date on the flyer below for the make-up day is incorrect).

Blue Star Welcome Week

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families—or roughly 33% of the All-Volunteer Force—relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place during the summer. While more than 70% of military families live off base in their local civilian communities, according to Blue Star Families' 2022 Military Family Lifestyle Survey, only 33% of military family respondents reported they felt a sense of belonging in their local community.

That’s why we’re declaring September 23rd through October 1st Blue Star Welcome Week! This exciting week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service. Learn more about how you can participate in Blue Star Welcome Week at bluestarwelcomeweek.org.

We plan to recognize students who are a part of a military family on the Morning News Show. If you are a military-connected family and would like your child to be recognized, please fill out this Google Form.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, please notify his/her teacher, so assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

✍️ Student Rights and Responsibilities Acknowledgement Due September 29

FCPS’ updated Student Rights and Responsibility (SR&R) booklet is available online and in SIS ParentVUE. The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents/caregivers to review and sign the SR&R. The SR&R will be visible upon logging in to SIS ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgment has been completed.

Signatures are due by Friday, September 29. Contact your school’s front office if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet. Visit the SIS ParentVUE Account Overview webpage for help logging in to your account.

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Perspective. Perspective means you appreciate when people see things in different ways. You have the ability to understand the world from multiple points of view.

Perspective is also referred to as wisdom and is distinct from intelligence. People with this strength are sought out for advice because they see the big picture and can make sense of the world’s complexity. This strength of perspective gives individuals the ability to see to the heart of difficult matters and achieve clarity. Most importantly, they are honest and behave in an ethically consistent manner.

Perspective helps an individual make sense of the world. It provides clarity on what matters and what does not. Being able to see things from multiple angles helps individuals remain calm and learn from mistakes; they are typically highly self-aware. Reflecting on their own feelings, thoughts, and motives helps them understand and empathize with other people. These individuals are strong listeners and ask great questions. Individuals with the strength of perspective help their group get through difficult or uncertain circumstances because they’re poised and can identify opportunities for success.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Parental Permission to Use Digital Resources

Our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here.

Included on this page is also a link to where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to Kaylin Daniels (kldaniels@fcps.edu) if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.
