NEW News
1. Message from Mr. Greata
Dear Woodson Community:
We are so excited to “Hawaiian Out” and welcome our feeder school students at tonight’s football game! The Cavalry will be unstoppable with Fairfax Villa, Wakefield Forest, Mantua, Canterbury Woods, Little Run, Olde Creek, and Frost students joining our ranks. #OneWoodson
Here are the must know details for Feeder Night:
- Feeder students K-8 get in free with a paying adult.
- Students can arrive as early as 5:00 pm for fun and games
- At 6:30 pm, students will line up in the end zone under the scoreboard and will be announced by school as they walk across the track. Then, students will run the 100-yard field from the east end zone back to the west end zone.
- Prior to the game, our combined pyramid choir, led by choir teachers Amy Moir will sing the national anthem.
It has been great to meet many of our student leaders this past week. Thank you to John Scholla for leading such an insightful conversation with our Cav Congress. Our Cav Congress is a group of students that represent a cross section of our entire student body. They gather to consider day-to-day issues and operational decisions for Woodson.
As we look forward to the weekend, I want to remind you that there is no school on Monday, September 25th, a day that also marks the middle of the 1st quarter. I hope families will enjoy the long weekend and take advantage of the time to review their child’s academic progress in SIS ParentVUE. If you need to sign up for ParentVUE, view this link.
At sundown Sunday evening, September 24th, the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur begins. Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year on the Jewish calendar. We hope that all in our Jewish community have an easy and meaningful fast.
Have a wonderful weekend and stay dry!! Mr. Greata Acting Principal WoodsonConnect@fcps.edu
2. Woodson Feeder Night
Join the Woodson community for a night of fun at our Feeder Night football game tonight!
At 5pm there will be music, face painting, games, and more. At 6:30pm, students from all feeder schools will gather under the scoreboard and will be announced by school as they walk across the track. Then, students will run the 100-yard field from the east end zone back to the west end zone.
The combined choirs of the Woodson Pyramid schools will sing the National Anthem and then the football game will begin at 7pm.
Students in K-8 will have free entry to the game with a paying adult ($5/ticket).
3. Cav Kickoff Dance Tonight
The Cav Kickoff dance has been rescheduled for tonight, September 22nd, immediately following the home football game versus Alexandria City.
The cost of the dance is $1 and it will take place in the outdoor basketball courts near door 9. This annual tradition celebrates the opening of school and is a great way to finish off a Friday night of cheering.
The dance begins at 9:15pm or at the end of the football game (whichever comes first) and ends promptly at 11:00pm.
Admission is collected at the door.
Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.
Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections.
Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 23 - October 1, 2023, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

8. Counselor Corner
School is in full swing! Counselors are working hard to settle students into the pace of this new year and are collaborating to support students' wellness and academic success. Woodson focuses on the Social and Emotional Learning of students, helping to support students where they are. As parents, you may support your learner’s social/emotional growth too. Here is a great video in English or Spanish to watch to understand social/emotional learning, what it is, and how it can be taught at home. We will share some resources and supports with 9th graders on 9/26 and 9/27. Our emphasis will be on starting the school year off well, getting connected to the Woodson community, and what resources are available to have a successful high school experience. We highlight our Woodson Wellness site and Freshman padlet from our main Student Services padlet (please bookmark).
Seniors! We have been privileged to support your journey through high school. We encourage you to be mindful of your upcoming application deadlines and request transcripts in time. We require 15 school days to process transcripts, secondary reports, and recommendation letters. Refer to the Senior Padlet for all the resources you need to sail through the application process. We support seniors every Wednesday morning in the Career Center before school- drop in and ask your application questions! Seniors may plan to join us in the Career Center for upcoming college application support sessions ahead of application deadlines during lunches on 10/6, 10/24, and 11/20.
Parents, from our main padlet, students may use the Academic Support padlet for content help sites, organization, test prep and other academic support resources. Math Peer Tutors are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after school (room B208) until 3:45 (late buses run on Tuesdays & Wednesdays). Where should you turn for questions or concerns regarding your student’s class? The content teacher is the expert and is ready to assist. Need a group conference? School Counselors may arrange one for you.
9. Social Emotional Learning Screener Opt-Out Information
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) commits to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning (SEL). The School Board has approved a screener to review students’ skills and experiences in these areas. FCPS staff will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for students in grades K-12. The screener provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs.
SEL skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.
If you do not want your student to take part in the SEL screener, please return the opt-out form found on the FCPS site to Student Services no later than Friday, September 29th.
