Hello Shrevewood Families,
Thank you to all of you who were able to attend our Back to School Night last night. We are proud of the work our students and staff are doing and hope you enjoyed the message our teachers shared. If you were unable to attend, your child's teacher will be sending out the presentation for you to review.
We also want to thank the PTA and all of the volunteers for putting on such a fun Back to School Picnic last Friday! Our students were dancing, laughing, and eating as much pizza and Kona Ice as they could.
Sincerely,
Joshua DeSmyter, Principal
Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

We are excited to have Baroody Camps back at Shrevewood for the FallĀ 2023 session providing a variety of Enrichment Programs for your children. Take a look at the fall preview below. ClickĀ REGISTER HEREĀ for more details, program descriptions, and where to register. Registration is open until Friday, 9/22 @11:59 p.m.
Our neighboring elementary school, Stenwood, will have community peers in their preschool program later this fall. The early childhood special education staff members have been investigating the possible opportunities for the students to participate in integration activities with typically developing peers. This will involve teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.Ā
The program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (2 per class), who are ages 3.5 (by September 30th) to 5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities.
The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. The students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.
All children learn through their play. Intellectual growth occurs in a social context, influenced strongly by the quality of social interactions. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and our preschoolers with special needs.Ā Feel free to contact Stenwood Principal Erica Riley,= atĀ esriley@fcps.edu for further explanation of the program.
If you are interested in having your child considered for this opportunity, please complete the Community Peers Preschool Program Interest and Information Form by Friday, September 15th.Ā Stenwood will host a playdate for interested students in early October.Ā The goal is to have the students start in the class by the end of October.Ā If you know of anyone who may be interested, feel free to forward them this information.Ā
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Ā Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.
Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Ā Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. Ā If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, are available online for Elementary (K-6), Middle School (7-8), and High School (9-12).Ā Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your childās school prior to Family Life Education instruction.
Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.Ā Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.Ā Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media). Ā Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your childās school library.Ā Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.
Program questions may be addressed at your childās school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or fle@fcps.edu.
In accordance with the FCPS SR&R, elementary students are not allowed to use the call/text function on smartwatches during the school day.Ā This policy does include non-instructional times including lunch and recess.Ā If your child is not feeling well, please remind them that they need to tell their teacher, so we can support them in the clinic; they can call you from there. Please do not call, message, or reply to your child on their cell phone or smartwatch during the school day. Below is the language from the SR&R for students in elementary school:
Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, Internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. Teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool, however one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs. Cell phones may be used on campus only before and after school.Ā The full SR&R document is linked here.
This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Being Present and Giving Others My Attention. This means when Iām with other people, Iām present and give them my full attention.
This element of the Other People Mindset is so important today due to the increasing number of distractions vying for our time and attention. Phone calls, text messages, emails, social media notifications all have the dangerous capacity to pull us away from the present moment and, whatās most important -- our relationships with other people.
Just like plants need sunlight to grow, our relationships need attention. If we donāt give our attention to the people weāre building relationships with -- whether family members, close friends, or even distant colleagues -- we canāt build those relationships. Itās vitally important that we pick our heads up from our cell phones and truly listen to other people when theyāre talking. A positive culture is built on positive relationships -- and we canāt build positive relationships without attention.
To practice and encourage the character strength of being present and giveg others my attention with your child, please visit the Positivity Projectās P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.
Be among the first to know about weather closings, bus delays, and other critical communications from FCPS and our school by providing your cell phone number and email in SIS ParentVUE. Make sure you complete the Emergency Care Form for your child every year and update when necessary.Ā
To update your contact information in ParentVUE, click the āOnline Packetsā tab in the upper right of the screen. Then select the āOnline Verification/Updateā form in the drop down menu. Click āBegin Packet.ā
Parents who do not have a SIS ParentVUE account continue to have the option to communicate updates via the normal paper process. They can also print and complete a blank Emergency Care Information Form needed for updates and submit it to the front office.
Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.
In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights, and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available ā a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the studentās grade level.
Get more information and view the 2023-24 Opt-Out Booklets.
FCPSā Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. In late June, the School Board approved changes to the SR&R for the 2023-24 school year. Updates include a revision of dress code expectations, bystander expectations for students witnessing harmful or unsafe behaviors, bullying, and substance abuse responses. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reidās letter to families regarding the SR&R.Ā
Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your childās school by Friday, September 29.
Our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used.Ā Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here.
Included on this page is also a linkĀ to where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to Kaylin Daniels (kldaniels@fcps.edu)Ā if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources weāve chosen to use this year.
