Message from Mrs. Burke

Good Afternoon Edison Community,

We are finally starting to get our fall weather. 🍁 We had a beautiful night last night for our golf team’s senior night at Fort Belvoir.  It was great to get out there and see them play the last few holes of the night, we even had some hype squad students show up to support their fellow seniors.  While we did not win our football game last night, it is always great to be outdoors to watch our football team, cheerleaders, and marching band.

We have a busy week coming up with homecoming.  Our students, as I write, are busy decorating the hallways for our decoration contest Monday morning.  Our theme this year is Movie Marathon, and I am looking forward to seeing how each class incorporates that into the various events.  We will have our Eagle Bowl game on Wednesday, September 20th, @ 6 p.m. on our football field, where the Class of 2024 will take on the Class of 2025.  Our Follies will be on Thursday, September 21st, at 7 p.m. in our auditorium.  Come out and see some great skits from all of our classes.  We will end our week with our homecoming football game against Wakefield starting at 7 p.m.  We will also be announcing the winners of the homecoming court at halftime.  Our culminating activity for the week will be our homecoming dance on Saturday, starting at 8 p.m. in our main gym.  All students who are attending the dance must be there by 9:30 p.m.

I am looking forward to seeing the school spirit!

From September 15 to October 15, FCPS recognizes and celebrates the histories and cultures of the members of our community who trace their heritage to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. I invite you to learn more about National Hispanic Heritage Month at this site.

L’Shana Tovah to our Jewish community celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year! Rosh Hashanah is one of Judaism’s holiest days and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection that ends with Yom Kippur. This evening is an FCPS religious and cultural observance, and there are no student activities this evening.

Have a great weekend!

Amanda Burke

Principal

Parent/Guardian University: Parent/Guardian University for 12th grade parents/guardians- September 27, 2023, 6:30pm, Edison High Lecture Hall. Please enter at door 1.

This session will focus on the variety of options students have after high school and steps to get them started.  We will discuss steps for 4-year college applications and review what counselors shared with your students during the senior check-ins.

We will have a representative from Northern Virginia Community College here as well as a representative from the Air Force ROTC scholarship program.

Parents, please encourage your students to always check their school email.  Email is the best way to share information and I do not want students to miss any opportunity!

3. Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS)

Each school pyramid has a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS) to provide substance abuse prevention, education, and intervention services. SAPS are part of the FCPS Office of Student Safety and Wellness. Like other members of the mental health team (school social workers, school psychologists, and school counselors), SAPS do not provide treatment services, but do support students while they are in our schools.

Key roles of a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist:

  • Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug education for students, parents, staff, and Fairfax County community stakeholders.
  • Intervention services upon violation of the Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook or referral for suspected substance use involvement.
  • Assessment of a student’s level of substance use and, if appropriate, subsequent referrals to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board for additional services or other community resources as appropriate.
  • Individual and group interventions for students. Prevention services for students, staff, parents, and Fairfax County community stakeholders.
  • Most importantly, building and maintaining positive relationships with students to provide support and encouragement.

5. Attendance

Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.

Parents/guardians must contact the attendance office (703-924-8080)/ edisonattendance@fcps.edu to report attendance; the online attendance portal will no longer be accepted to notify our school of your student’s absence.  Edison is not monitoring or accepting any absences submitted via the on-line form. Due to an excessive number of forgeries, the online attendance form is currently disabled.

Below is a quick guide for reporting all-day absences, late arrivals, and early check-outs from school.

6. 🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher, so that assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

7. Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy Services for High School Students

Teletherapy services continue to be available for all FCPS high school students at no cost. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hazel’s highly-qualified therapists specialize in speaking “teen.”

Caregivers must first opt in their students to access Hazel Health. Then, a caregiver or school counselor, social worker, or psychologist can refer the student to Hazel for services. Learn more on the FCPS teletherapy webpage.

The PTSA's All Night Grad Party (ANGP) needs parent volunteers from all grade levels. Here's why:

ANGP
  • Planning an event of this magnitude takes a lot of advance planning.
  • Continuing the All-Night Grad Party tradition for future graduates requires sharing vital information from year to year.
  • Volunteers from rising grades can learn and improve the process.

The First Planning meeting is Wednesday, October 4 at 7:00 PM.  Email Lisa Staresina at ehsptsa.angp@gmail.com  for the meeting link.

Read here to learn more about how parents of all grade levels can help each year.  https://edisonangp.com/ehs-parent-volunteers-needed (you may need to copy and paste in your browser).

We have several volunteer opportunities with differing levels of commitment.  Let’s find the task that’s right for you!
