Specialist Spotlight: Counselors

We are your Bren Mar Park School Counselors, Mrs. Michelle Kramer and Ms. Mackenzie Cate. We support all students' social-emotional, academic and career goals to help them be productive citizens in our school. We teach classroom counseling lessons, where we cover topics including friendship, empathy, bullying prevention, and coping with big feelings. We also hold small groups and lunch bunches, and may check-in with individual students for brief counseling as needed. Our goal is to keep students in class happy, healthy and learning.

This week during our lessons, students are learning about the role of a Counselor and what we can do to help them in school. We are also learning and reviewing our school expectations, such as being respectful to all staff and students, being mindful of our school and how important it is to keep our area clean in the cafeteria. We are also reading the book, “Our School is a Family.” This story talks about how important it is to develop a great relationship with your classmates and adults in school, and how school is a safe place full of people who care and love you. We encourage you to talk to your child about their friends at school and what adults they can go to for help.

We are holding a Social Emotional Learning Family Night on October 19th at 6:30 pm. Come learn about ways you can help your child cope with big feelings!

Please feel free to reach out if you have any concern regarding your child.

Family Literacy

We want your Input: Coffee & Conversations

Bren Mar Park hosts monthly Coffee and Conversations. They are typically held the last Friday of every month at 9:30 a.m., both virtually and in person as well as recorded and posted on the BMP website for later viewing.

These are meant to be informal presentations on topics of interest to our Bren Mar Park families and encourage questions and conversation. Each year we ask our families what they would like covered. These are your coffees and your community, so we welcome your input.

Share your ideas through this Google Form

Student Snacks

All K - 5 students are welcome to bring snacks to school.  We encourage healthy choices, such as fruit or crackers. Students are expected to eat their own snack items and not share with other students for safety reasons.

Missed Days Add Up Quickly!

  • Just a few missed days a month adds up to several school weeks missed in a year.
  • Excused and unexcused absences can make it more difficult for your child to keep up with others, especially in math and reading.
  • Kindergarten and first grade are critical. Missing school during these years makes it more difficult for children to learn later.

Learn more about the importance of attendance on the FCPS Attendance website.

If your student is going to be absent, please submit an absence using our 24/7 attendance phone line at 703-914-7272 or  complete the attendance form at
