Superintendent, Dr. Reid Visits Back to School Night

We were excited to welcome many of you to our Back to School Nights last week! We were also excited to welcome a special guest on the first night--our Superintendent, Dr. Reid! We're always proud to show off our amazing staff and supportive community and Dr. Reid left impressed with both, highlighting GFES in her weekly internal newsletter:

"Tuesday evening I had the opportunity to attend the Great Falls ES Back to School event. This was a very well attended evening of information and excitement. I had the opportunity to visit with the PTA, students, staff, and parents. Principal Sara Harper shared her passion for all things educational as we toured the classrooms and visited with attendees. Learning happens best in community and we are grateful for our PTA support in the schools. Go Roadrunners!!"

We are so grateful for our PTA and the support you all provide! Here's looking forward to an amazing year!

Help Your Student Build Strong Attendance Habits

September is Attendance Awareness Month. Make school attendance a priority and help your student develop good habits that last a lifetime. Some ways parents and guardians can help their students get into the habit of regular on-time school attendance include:

  • Make sure your student keeps a regular bedtime and establishes a morning routine.
  • Turn off all electronics including TVs, phones, and tablets at bedtime.
  • Make sure clothes and school supplies are ready the night before.
  • Develop backup transportation plans to school if the normal routine is interrupted. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your student to school.
  • Avoid scheduling medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.
  • Talk to your school’s mental health staff for advice if your student seems anxious about going to school.

For more information, please visit FCPS Attendance Resources. We look forward to partnering with you to foster a successful school year.

Patriot Day 9.11

September 11 National Day of Service

The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and to act in service to others as a way of honoring those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks. FCPS acknowledges the loss of life that day, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country.

All students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it also supports Portrait of a Graduate attributes, and social and emotional learning skills. Middle and high school students can find out more about service learning by logging into their Naviance account to access x2VOL.

Tutor.com Available Again This Year

All FCPS students continue to have unlimited access to live, 24/7, one-on-one online tutoring services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Student participation is optional and parents/caregivers can opt their student(s) out of accessing the services. Get more information on the Tutor.com Online Tutoring Services webpage.

Students can access Tutor.com via a link in Schoology. Additional information about how to log in and access a tutor is provided to families via the following: Elementary - How It Works and Middle & High - How It Works. 2023-24 Health and Safety Guidance for Schools

Although the COVID-19 hospital transmission level (previously the COVID-19 Community Transmission level) for Fairfax County is currently low, COVID-19 cases have risen in Virginia during the last few weeks, and flu season will soon be upon us. Be sure to review FCPS Health and Safety Guidance for the best ways to prevent the spread of disease and to find out when students should stay home from school.
