Dear Cardinal Families,
Thank you for attending Back-to-School Night (BTSN) last week. We hope you enjoyed meeting your child’s teacher and getting a feel for what it is like to learn in their classroom. Thank you for also spending time with our specialists in the cafeteria, they enjoyed getting to know you! Our goal is to provide you with events this year that are meaningful. Please provide us with feedback on BTSN so we can continue to improve this very important evening.

The fall AAP Newsletter shares detailed information regarding our continuum of services. Please take your time to read it and then join us for our parent information sessions listed below. We will be hosting two parent information sessions in the Fall for families interested in learning more about advanced academic programs (AAP) at Cunningham Park. Please save these dates:
Thursday, September 28th from 6:00pm-7:00 pm, online: Parent Information Meeting regarding an Introduction to AAP and the Continuum of Services at Fairfax County Public Schools, and specifically, Cunningham Park Elementary School. This information session will be open to all K-6 families and will take place online. Please RSVP to attend and a link will be emailed to you before the meeting.
Thursday, October 5th from 6:00-7:00 pm, online: Parent Information Meeting on understanding the Full Time AAP Screening Process. This information session will be open to all K-6 families and will take place online. Please RSVP to attend and a link will be emailed to you before the meeting.
We will be participating in The Zones of Regulation™ curriculum (or “The Zones” for short), which are lessons and activities designed by Leah Kuypers, licensed occupational therapist, to help students gain skills in the area of self-regulation. A critical aspect of this curriculum is that all adults know and understand The Zones language. This creates a comfortable and supportive environment for children to practice self-regulation skills. It also helps children learn the skills more quickly and be more likely to apply them in many situations. You can support your child during this process by doing the following:
- Use the language and talk about the concepts of The Zones as they apply to you in a variety of environments.
- Make comments aloud so your child understands it is natural that we all experience the different Zones and use strategies to control (or regulate) ourselves. For example, “This is really frustrating me and making me go into the Yellow Zone. I need to use a tool to calm down. I will take some deep breaths.”
- Help your child become comfortable using the language to communicate his or her feelings and needs by encouraging the student to share his or her Zone with you.
It is important to note that everyone experiences all of the Zones—the Red and Yellow Zones are not the “bad” or “naughty” Zones. All of the Zones are expected at one time or another. The Zones of Regulation is intended to be neutral and not communicate judgment. We will continue to share Zones strategies with you this year so you can add to your Zones Toolbox at home!

HONORING A TEACHER OF THE ARTS
In honor of National Arts in Education Week—September 10–16—the Kennedy Center is kicking off a month-long celebration of gratitude for arts teachers nationwide.
Together with AMC Theatres, we’re reaching out to all corners of the country, inviting you to take part and reflect on the arts teachers who left a mark on your life—whether it was in school, during extracurricular activities, or within your community. Don’t miss the chance to share your own story about how an arts teacher has impacted your life! If you have the details, you can even provide the teacher’s contact information on the Kennedy Center website and they’ll make sure your message reaches them directly. Let’s make this back-to-school season a time to remember as we honor these incredible arts educators!

Our neighboring elementary school, Stenwood will have community peers in our preschool program later this fall. The early childhood special education staff members have been investigating the possible opportunities for the students to participate in integration activities with typically developing peers. This will involve teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.
The program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (2 per class), who are ages 3.5 (by September 30th) to 5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities.
The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. The students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.
All children learn through their play. Intellectual growth occurs in a social context, influenced strongly by the quality of social interactions. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and our preschoolers with special needs. Feel free to contact Erica Riley, esriley@fcps.edu for further explanation of our program.
If you are interested in having your child considered for this opportunity, please complete the Community Peers Preschool Program Interest and Information Form by Friday, September 15th. Stenwood will host a playdate for interested students in early October. The goal is to have the students start in the class by the end of October. If you know of anyone who may be interested, feel free to forward them this information.
