Fort Belvoir Primary School Weeks at a Glance 09/01/2023

Principals' Note

Fort Belvoir Primary Families,

We are enthused to have everyone back in the building now! This year, we are optimistic and confident that we will provide each of our students a High-Quality Educational Experience as they embark on their educational journey. Attendance plays a major role in accomplishing this.

Admin Pic

Our attendance goal of Fort Belvoir Primary is 96% or greater. It is important to develop strong attendance habits at the start of the school year. Studies show that when students are actively engaged in school regularly they are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Please watch this video with tips from Fairfax Pyramid principals and visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for additional tips and strategies.

Safety Drills

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills

We are Fort Belvoir strong!

Family Life Education

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a comprehensive Family Life Education (FLE) program.  FLE instruction begins in kindergarten and continues through grade 12. FLE includes topics in human growth and development and social and emotional health.  FLE instruction helps students gain knowledge and skills needed to make healthy, responsible, and life-enhancing decisions related to relationships and their physical, emotional, and social health. Parents and guardians are partners in their child’s learning.  FLE instruction supports the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents and guardians can review FLE materials.  Parents/guardians can access FLE lessons in Schoology using their SIS username and password.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media titles online. Lessons and media are available for review at your child’s school.

To foster respect for family choices, parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. A student who is opted out will receive alternative health instruction.  To opt your child out of all or part of the FLE program for this school year, please complete the opt-out form that is in the Thursday folder.  Return the completed form to your child’s school before FLE instruction begins. You do not need to return the form to the school if you wish for your child to take part in FLE instruction.

FLE program descriptions and opt-out forms are available on the FCPS website.

If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher or Mary Flint, mflint@fpcs.edu.

Wellness Team

Meet the Mental Wellness Team

Our Mental Wellness Team is made up by our School Psychologist Mr. Maz, School Social Worker Ms. Idlet, School Counselors Mr. Kamali (not pictured) and Ms. Brogan, and School Behavioral Health Specialist Ms. Mohabir (left to right in the photo).

Kyle Maziarski, School Psychologist – Hello! I’m Kyle Maziarski and I am your School Psychologist. I grew up a military kid and got to spend 9 years of my childhood overseas. My father was in the Marine Corps and my mother was, and still is, a teacher. I became a dad in April of this year and am loving every second of this new journey. When I’m not changing diapers, I enjoy working out, reading, cooking, and being outdoors.

I attended undergraduate and graduate school at Radford University in Radford, VA and began my school psychology career in Wyoming. This is my 4th year in FCPS and at Fort Belvoir Primary, and 7th year as a school psychologist. I like to think of my job as being the person that can help make school fun for students. I love working with students, teachers, and parents to provide the best school experience for our students. I’m proud to be at Fort Belvoir Primary and working with these students and families to address any and all mental health and learning concerns.

Deatra Idlet, School Social Worker-  School Social Workers are trained mental health providers who provide interventions that promote the educational and social-emotional success of all students.

I have worked at Fort Belvoir for 8 years as a special education teacher and now I am grateful to support my Belvoir Family in a new role as the School Social Worker.  I am married and I have three children (14, 12, 9 months).  I grew up as a “military brat” and moved around the world every 3 years.    My family was even stationed on Fort Belvoir many years ago.  One of my favorite hobbies is traveling with my family and friends.  I am excited and proud to be a Fort Belvoir Dolphin.

Christopher Kamali, School Counselor - School counselors help all students: apply academic achievement strategies, manage emotions, apply interpersonal skills, and plan for postsecondary options.

This is my second year at Fort Belvoir Primary School and I am excited to work with students and their families to form partnerships that foster student growth. I have worked as a social worker and case manager before joining FCPS. I grew up in the area and I am grateful to be able to work for this community.

Reon Brogan, School Counselor – I am originally from Alabama. I come from a family where love runs deep, and echoes of laughter bind us together. It is that same love and laughter that my husband and I gratefully pass on to our four children. We are a proud Army family. I enjoy traveling, spending time with family, and watching football.

This is my third year serving the families and students at Fort Belvoir Primary School. I am here to support the social, emotional, and learning needs of our students. It is my hope that this year will be a successful experience for all students.

Jessica Mohabir, School Behavioral Health Specialist - I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center who is embedded within the school to provide comprehensive behavioral health services to military connected youth enrolled at Fort Belvoir Elementary Primary School. I was a military child myself, which is where my passion for serving military children and families stems from. I love to travel, I am a foodie at heart, and I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and my dog. I am excited to be a part of the Dolphin team!

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

FCPS is offering a new online option where parents can easily update their child’s information!  The Online Verification Update packet or OVU will allow parents to review and update phone numbers, emergency contacts and health information (such as health conditions and immunizations) for students in grades PS/HS  and kindergarten through 12th grade.

Enrolling parents/guardians who have a SIS ParentVUE account may submit them electronically by using the Online Verification/Update packet

Parents can obtain an activation key letter to activate their SIS ParentVUE account by contacting their child’s school or by submitting the Parent Support Request form (select Online Registration in the application dropdown menu) for assistance with this process.

Important:  Do not use the OVU packet if your address has changed or if you moved to another FCPS school.  Contact the current school directly to complete address updates or to withdraw and transfer your student to the new school.

SEL Screener

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

Key updates to the screener this year include:

  • Different versions for students in grades 3-5 and 6-12.
  • Fewer topics with more questions to provide schools and families with more data to support planning.
  • Additional questions aligned with FCPS’ commitment to educational equity.

Results are mailed home to families after each screening. Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVue.

For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact us at 703-781-2700.

Please note that the SEL Screener differs from the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey. For more information about the Youth Survey, see the Fairfax County Youth Survey site.

Parent Screen Activity Report

A new functionality is available to FCPS parents who are interested in knowing more about their child’s Internet browsing activity on an FCPS device. Parents can sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, which will provide a list of the top sites the child visited that week.

Additionally, if parents wish to get more detailed information, the weekly Parent Report offers parents the ability to self-sign-up to the free Internet Use Parent Portal. Parents who sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal can log-in any time to see a little more detail about their child’s internet browsing. The portal also offers the parent added ability to “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours on the FCPS device.

Interested parents can submit a request directly at the bottom of the Technology Support for Families page for weekly Parent Reports. FCPS will validate the enrolling parent’s email in SIS, and once processed, the parent will receive a weekly report over each weekend. The weekend report will come from our internet content filtering service, Lightspeed.

For more information, including a sample view of the Parent Report and the Internet Use Parent Portal, please visit our Lightspeed Parent Report information page

 FCPS Cares!

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees at Fort Belvoir Primary ES. We love our FBES staff members, let's tell them how we feel!
