Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We had a great first week of school and are excited to jump into week #2!  There were many smiles on faces this morning as our students entered the building.  Our staff continues to focus on getting to know students, establishing routines, and diving into instruction.

Please send a water bottle and snack to school daily with your children for them to enjoy in the morning or afternoon, depending on when their lunch is scheduled.  Do not send glass bottles or containers to school with your children.

While we do not have birthday parties at school we do encourage parents who want to acknowledge their child’s special day to donate a book to the classroom or send in something tangible such as pencils or stickers for classmates.  Edible treats such as food and drink to be shared with others are not allowed as we have students with allergies.

We hope to see you at the County Fair at Madison High School this Thursday, August 31, 5:00-7:00 pm.  Please consider joining the Madison Pyramid for this fun event.  Details can be found here.

Please join us for Back To School Night next Thursday, September 7.   We invite you to spend time in your child’s classroom, meet their teacher and learn more about the year to come.  This evening is for adults only and is scheduled by grade level.

  • K-1: 5:00-5:45
  • 2-3: 6:00-6:45
  • 4-6: 7:00-7:45

There will be no school for students and staff on September 1st and 4th as we are off for the Labor Day weekend.  We hope you enjoy this extended weekend with your family.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antionette Nauflett

Digital Resources Consent

Teachers at Marshall Road will use a variety of digital resources to help students learn during the 2023-24 school year.  These digital resources have been checked and approved by Fairfax County Public Schools.  Please provide your consent for your student to use these resources through the Parent Digital Consent System (also linked on the Marshall Road Homepage). You will need to use your SIS Parent account to provide consent for EACH Individual Student in your family.  Here are step-by-step directions for providing your consent online.  You may also request a paper copy or verbally provide consent to your child’s teacher.

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

The Health Information Forms and Emergency Care Forms were sent home in Tuesday Folders last week.  If you have not already returned these forms, you can return the hard copies to the school with your students, or you can update these forms online through a new feature, called the Online Verification Packet, available through your Parent Vue account.

Attendance Reminder

Please remember, for any attendance notifications or dismissal changes, please email or call the Attendance line at 703-937-1515 or email at MarshallRoadElem.Attendance@fcps.edu.  Even if you notify the teacher, you must also notify the attendance line for your student’s attendance and dismissal changes.

Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day on September 5th

Every other Tuesday this fall we will celebrate Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day!  We will kick off on Tuesday, September 5th.  Join us on the Bike Train or walk to school to enjoy exercise and fresh air and help alleviate congestion in the Kiss & Ride line.

The Bike Train departs Meadow Lane Park at 8:45 am.  Students may meet at Meadow Lane or join the Bike Train along the route.  If you have a student joining the Bike Train, please consider signing up to chaperone some of the rides!

If your student rides in the morning, please make sure they know how they are getting home in the afternoon and where they will meet you (at school, at home, or at Meadow Lane Park).  If they normally take the bus, you must inform the MRES office that they will be biking home (email jfheflin@fcps.edu).

Riders must have a helmet and be comfortable riding a two-wheel bike on neighborhood roads.  Please visit our Bike Train page for additional details.

Food4Thought (F4T) Food Drive

The Marshall Road weekend food program, F4T, is resuming in September and we need items to sustain our support for families throughout the school year.  Each week, Marshall Road volunteers will pack nearly 80 weekend food packs to help support children experiencing food insecurity with healthy food for the weekend.  If you can help students in our community with a donation, we would be most grateful.

Currently the most needed items are Chef Boyardee meals, fruit cups, boxes of mac-and-cheese, and clean plastic bags (grocery-sized only).  See here for a full list of items used each week.  Donations can be placed in the F4T bin in the lobby by students during the week of September 5-8 and by adults at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 7.  Items can also be donated via our Amazon wish list or Walmart wish list.

For other ways to donate contact Krista Davidson, school social worker at kmdavidson@fcps.edu or via telephone at 703-937-1556 or see the Marshall Road PTA website.

We also need a few additional volunteers who are available to prepare bags of food for children to take home for the weekend.  Volunteers would be needed approximately once or twice a month Monday through Thursday for between 1 and 1½ hours during the school day.  If you are interested in helping, please reach out to Lisa Kelso or Erin Lebbin at Food4Thought@marshallroadpta.org
