Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings, SoCo family,

We had another incredible week of success at SCHS these past several days. Students and staff are continuing to connect so well with each other, and hearing students share the stories about their trusted adults at school truly makes my heart smile!

One of the best parts of the week was Open House on Wednesday night. Seeing all of our parents enjoying the opportunity to meet teachers was the main goal, but we also found other unintended benefits from the evening. Our student leaders, for example, did a FANTASTIC job of helping our parents get to the right room for their meetings. They also did a phenomenal job of selling merchandise and refreshments throughout the evening. All in all, I left the building that night whistling and feeling proud to be part of this Stallion family. Here are just a few of the pictures taken that great evening.

Our parking lot flow in the mornings and afternoons continue to be significantly better. I do have a small request for those of you who pick up students in the afternoon. Please refrain from driving around (and in some cases over) the orange cones in the front of the faculty lot. We are prioritizing having a safe place for students and staff to walk in the afternoons, and part of that process is having little to no traffic in that section. If you are picking up your student, please park in an available space or alongside the curb at either of our Kiss and Ride locations.

Lastly, here are just a few reminders of behavior expectations we have students at our football games.

All elementary and middle school students need to be accompanied & supervised by an adult while at the game. High school students who get dropped off must plan to have their rides waiting for them by 9:30 PM.

If you or your student plans to come, please take the time to discuss the relevant information below:

  • The gates to the stadium will open at 6:00 pm.
  • No backpacks, bags or sports equipment will be allowed in the stadium.
  • No outside food or drinks are allowed. The concession stand will be open.
  • The purpose for students who attend our varsity football games is to watch the game, cheerleaders, band, and dance team.
  • We cheer for SoCo and not against our opponent. All cheers should be positive.
  • All spectators are expected to be in the stands. We should not have guests hanging out by the concession stand and hills behind the end zones.
  • Elementary & middle school students must always be supervised by an adult.
  • If you leave the game, you will not be able to re-enter the stadium.
  • Whistles, air horns and similar noisemakers are prohibited.
  • Anyone caught trying to enter the game without paying will be removed and can be banned from attending future games.
  • All students need to leave immediately after the game.

Our goal is to create a positive community event.  Any behaviors that take away from this goal may result in being removed from the game and not being allowed to attend future games.

I hope everyone enjoys this extended, four-day weekend!

post-secondary planning.

Senior Families

Student Services has some upcoming events for both students and their families to assist you in your post-secondary planning.

For Parents/Guardians:

Senior Parent Information Night is coming up on Thursday, September 7th at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium.  We will discuss the nuts and bolts of post-secondary planning including:

  • College selection and admissions timelines
  • College application components
  • Process for sending important documents such as official transcripts, counselor and teacher recommendations, and test scores when applicable
  • Options available through Northern Virginia Community College
  • Financial aid resources
  • Brief overview of post-secondary options such as military enlistment, employment, and trade and technical education

We welcome any follow up questions at an informal parent Q&A on Friday, September 15th at 8:30am in the College and Career Center – Room C101. (Please note that the Q&A is meant for general questions, and we ask that specific questions related to your senior be directed to their individual counselor.)

For Students:

Seniors will participate in group meetings with their counselor to go over college and career planning topics and important Senior To-Dos for this fall during Advisory.  Seniors will meet with their counselors on September 5th and 7th.  Students should check in with their Advisory teacher at the beginning of the period before being dismissed to their designated locations. Counselors will also be following up with seniors throughout the fall to discuss individual plans.

Other:

In the meantime, seniors and parents can work on completing two important forms that help your counselor craft any required counselor recommendations. They are the "Request for Counselor Recommendation (Student Form)" and "Parent Input form" at this link:  https://southcountyhs.fcps.edu/student-services/post-secondary-planning. Thank you to those of you who already submitted them last spring and over the summer.

2023 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. In late June, the School Board approved changes to the SR&R for the 2023-24 school year. Updates include a revision of dress code expectations, bystander expectations for students witnessing harmful or unsafe behaviors, bullying, and substance abuse responses. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Friday, September 29

Parental Permission to Use Digital Resources

Some FCPS-approved digital resources require parent consent before they can be used by students. Find the list of resources which require consent on the Parent Consent webpage. This page also includes directions for providing permission.

Each digital resource used in FCPS has had an instructional and technical review. Information about the educational technology tools approved for use within FCPS can be found in the online Digital Ecosystem Library.

Parents can find more information about FCPS-approved digital resources on the Digital Resources in FCPS webpage.

2023-24 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms

The Fairfax County School Board is committed to protecting student and family privacy and wants all parents to be aware of their rights. If you would like more information regarding your rights and opt-out forms, please review the information found in the 2023-24 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms. FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available—a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level. To access the complete Annual Notice opt-out booklets online (requires use of a PDF reader), go to http://www.fcps.edu, and search for Opt-Out Booklets. Choose either the K-8 or 9-12 version. Parents may also request a paper copy from the principal’s office at their child’s school. If you wish to opt your child out of any of the activities mentioned above, you must complete and return the appropriate forms to your child’s school.

Family Life Education (FLE) Opt-Out Forms

If you wish to opt your student out of FLE, please fill out the appropriate form and return it to Mrs. deKanter in the SCHS Athletics Office.
