Principal Message

What a great first week it was at West Potomac!  It was so enjoyable reconnecting with students and meeting our newest Wolverines.  As I walked the halls and visited classrooms, I saw our faculty spending the first few days fostering community and building relationships.  We also spent time in Advisory classes reviewing West Po 101 and 102.  These lessons were an opportunity for students to be introduced or review information such as resources available to them in the building and various school expectations.  Some examples of this information include:

  • Remember your teachers, counselors, administrators are all here to support you. Never hesitate to reach out if you have a question or need assistance.
  • After initial morning arrival, until 2:55pm dismissal, students can only enter and exit our building via Door 1
  • During the school day, never open an exterior door for anyone.
  • When you leave the classroom, you must always have a pass from your teacher.
  • During lunch you must remain in the cafeteria, College and Career Center or one of the two outdoor patios.
  • Students may not order any food delivery to campus.

Today we had a great kick off celebration for the Class of 2024 in the gym during advisory.  Students walked into the gym while “Pomp and Circumstance” played.  This was to remind them of the end goal this year of Graduation on June 11 and we look forward to finishing the school year with the same music we started!

Our amazing first week ends tonight as we head down for the Battle of the Highway at Mount Vernon High School.  Lets Go West Po!

Wishing you a restful weekend.

Take care,

Kevin McMahon

Interim Principal

Student Services / College and Career Center Updates

  • As a reminder, Ms. Piechoski will be on leave through December. To ensure Ms. Piechoski’ s students are supported, we have divided her caseload amongst the rest of the team. Please review the updated counselor assignments here. If you have any difficulties identifying your child’s counselor, reach out to any member of our team and we can put you in touch with the correct counselor.

Schedules - Elective Change Window

  • As we enter the second week of school, School Counselors are working to ensure that each student has a complete schedule with the appropriate courses.  If for any reason, a student’s schedule is missing a course, a graduation requirement or they are enrolled in a course they already completed, the student needs to come to Student Services during the class period that is impacted to fix their schedule.
  • The second week of school also begins the Elective Change Window. Only lateral changes (electives within the same period), that are not at capacity will be considered.  Core (non-elective) AP/DE/HNs drops are unavailable until the end of September.  At that time, the Advanced Academics Schedule Change Packet will be available and those requests will be reviewed and considered on a space availability basis.
  • Students who wish to explore dropping an elective during the elective change window should see their counselor during the period of the elective they are looking to drop. After reporting to class and being marked present for attendance, they can ask their teacher for a pass to see their counselor to explore another elective.
