A Message from the Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

What a joy it has been to see your children at Ravensworth this week.  Mrs. Padilla and I have had the opportunity to visit classrooms and we’ve been particularly impressed by the way our students have handled the transition back to school.  They are excited to be back, and they were eager to learn.  I’m confident that they will have a wonderful year of learning and growth.

I want to thank you for your partnership in making this a great first week.  Your support is essential to our students’ success.

I look forward to working with you throughout the school year.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Preschool Community Peers

Ravensworth Elementary is pleased to announce that we will have community peers in our preschool program. The early childhood special education staff members have been investigating the possible opportunities for our students to participate in integration activities with same age peers. This will involve teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.

Our program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are age 3 ½ -5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

More information will be coming out in the Wednesday Folder on August 30th.  We hope you will consider having your preschool age child with us this school year.

Transportation – Kiss and Ride

arrival dismissal2

Please help us set good examples for students!  There are crosswalks at Nutting Dr. and Gosport Ln. and also at Nutting Dr. and Ellet Rd.  It is much safer to cross Nutting Dr. at these corners than to park opposite the bus loop and cross Nutting Dr. without a crosswalk. Kiss and Ride is a much safer route to use to drop-off and pick-up students.  Please keep this in mind.

Also, while using Kiss and Ride, as you approach patrols for drop-off or pick-up, do not use your phone.  The Kiss and Ride area is a cell free zone.

Please do not make a U-turn at Nutting Dr. in front of the bus loop.

We appreciate you helping us keep our students safe.

Absences Add Up – Plan Ahead

As we get closer to the start of school, please plan travel around the school calendar. Every day of school is important to overall academic, social and emotional progress.

Updated FCPS Phone Policy for Students

cell phone

Students in K-6 must keep phones silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day unless there is a medical need or emergency, or teachers have allowed the usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool.

Parents should talk to their child(ren) before the start of the school year about these expectations for this upcoming school year. Families may also review the parental controls available for all iPhone and Android users. More information about the SR&R is available online.

We are always looking for kind and caring substitute teachers and substitute instructional assistants to ensure our students continue to thrive when teachers and instructional assistants need to be out of the classroom. Substitute teaching is a great opportunity for future teachers, stay-at-home family members, retirees, college students, part-time employees, and anyone who wants to make a difference! School Meals

Preparing for and Paying for Meals at School

Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals

The application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2023-24 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible for the 2023-24 school year, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

Paying With MySchoolBucks

The best way to purchase meals (and keep food lines moving!) is to use MySchoolBucks. Set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today. Our front office staff can help with any questions.

MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically, as needed. Families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account. Visit FCPS’ Food and Nutrition webpage for more information.

Library support needed!

If you’re interested or have questions, you can contact Mrs. Sloan at jasloan@fcps.edu

Thank you for your consideration!

PTA is Seeking a New Treasurer

pta get involved

The PTA is looking for someone willing to assume the role of Treasurer for the 2023-2024 school year. Unfortunately, our current Treasurer, Lane, is unable to continue in the position. While we will miss her in that role, it opens up a wonderful opportunity for someone looking to get involved. The position includes:

  • Tracking and imputing incomes and expenses to QuickBooks
  • Creating Monthly Budget Reports and presenting them at Meetings
  • Writing checks and depositing payments received
  • Attending monthly meetings

The position demands anywhere between 2-5 hours of work per month. While an accounting background and QuickBooks experience is helpful, it is not necessary.

Anyone interested in the role can send an email to president@ravensworthpta.org. Further questions about the role may be sent to selemefamilia@gmail.org
