Roadrunner Rundown

8/21/23

Topic

Description/Date

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are thrilled to have our Roadrunners back for the 2023-2024 school year!  Our first day together was very exciting as staff and students got to know one another!  Our theme for the year is Growing Kindness and this starts in each classroom.  The goal is for the roots of kindness to grow throughout our building into the community.

We have bus Information of major importance for you to share with your children and friends.  Many families are used to a specific bus number that they have been assigned for years.  However, this year many of those numbers have changed.  FCPS sent communications via email and text with the most current bus information on August 10.  This information was also loaded to your parent SIS account.  MRES mailed all families a white envelope with transportation information including bus numbers, K&R information and dismissal procedures. Some students got on the wrong bus today because they were relying on last year's number.  Some families may have told their children an old number or put an old number on the MRES transportation form.  Please double check the current information from FCPS and MRES to make sure you are clear on the correct  bus number.  Call the main office tomorrow if you are uncertain.

Please be sure to send a water bottle and snack with your child daily.  Teachers give students a snack break in the morning or afternoon, depending on when their lunch is scheduled.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett

School Events & Information

Madison Pyramid County Fair

Marshall Road families and staff are invited to attend the County Fair at Madison High School on August 31, 5:00-7:00 pm.  Please consider joining the Madison Pyramid for this fun event.  Details can be found here.

Attendance Procedures at Marshall Road School

Attendance is taken five days a week.  Even if you contact your student’s teachers to inform them of an absence, it is also essential for you to report the absence to the office before 10:00 am, so the attendance can be coded accurately in SIS.  You should also email the attendance line if your student will be arriving late, leaving school early or changing their dismissal route.   Details can be found here.

PTA Update

Celebrate the First Week of School with Ice Cream

Let's kick off this school year with a D4D sweet treat at Ben and Jerry's Wednesday, August 23.  Dine in or take a few pints to go from 4:00 pm to close and 20% of all sales will be donated to the Marshall Road PTA.  Just mention MRES when you place your order.  No code or flier needed.  See you there!

Room Rep Interest Form

The PTA helps coordinate room reps for every classroom.  Room Reps help communicate the teacher’s needs to families, assist in organizing class celebrations, plan teacher appreciation efforts, and help communicate classroom and PTA information to the families.  We are hoping to find a room parent for every home room teacher!  See our Room Parent at a Glance info sheet here.  Please use this Google Form to let us know if you're available to be a room parent for their class.  Questions? Contact Monica Nuno at vicepresident@marshallroadpta.org.

Fall Enrichments

Every fall and spring the PTA coordinates with vendors to offer an array of Enrichment Programs which are held at the school.  These programs are only available in the mornings before school and typically last eight weeks, though some do run longer.

Class offerings change each semester.  This fall offerings will include Fitness Warriors, Upcycled Art, Chess, Spanish, 3D Printing, Dance Fitness, Roblox Game Creation, Odyssey of the Mind, Yoga, Strategic Board Game Club, and MORE!  Classes and registration information will be posted to our enrichment site.

Registration for fall classes will open August 28 at 7:00 am and run through September 12 at 9:00 pm.  The first day of classes will be September 18.  Financial assistance is available for those who qualify and may be requested when you register.  Classes have enrollment limits and are filled on a "first-come first-served" basis.  Questions?  Email Cheryl at enrichment@marshallroadpta.org.

Bike Train Clinic this Saturday

The Marshall Road Bike Train is returning this Fall!  The season will start with a Bike Train clinic on Saturday, August 26 at 9:30 am.  Meet in front of the school near the basketball court/blacktop.  The Clinic will give everyone an opportunity to gather before the first Bike Train.  We will give safety tips, go over Bike Train policies, and answer any questions.  Then the Bike Train will run every other Tuesday this fall, morning and afternoon from September 5-November 14.

Save the Date for the first PTA Meeting of the year!

Our first meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, August 30 at 6:30 pm and will be hybrid.  Join us in person in the school library or virtually on zoom.   If you are joining virtually, please use this zoom link.  Meeting ID: 870 7770 0972  Passcode: 319256

You will have a chance to hear from Principal Chapman and learn about what the PTA has planned for the year.  We will also be voting on our budget for the year and reviewing the annual audit.  If you'd like to have a vote on our budget and all PTA matters, please take a moment to become a PTA member.   An annual membership is $15 for one parent /guardian and $10 for a second parent/guardian (a total of only $25 for a family) and needs to be renewed each year.

Teacher & Staff Wish Lists

Now that you know your student's teacher assignments, this is a great time to review the Teacher and Staff Amazon Wishlists on our PTA website here. You will see the lists are filled with key items that will benefit our students. You can support our teachers and staff, and by extension ALL MRES students, by reviewing their Amazon wishlists and helping fulfill their wishes!  These lists are up year-round, and we will continue to add lists for additional teachers and staff as we receive them.
