The Lion's Roar
August 18, 2023
Thanks for Coming to Open House!

It was wonderful to see so many happy, smiling faces at our Open House last night! We could feel the excitement as students met their new teachers, checked out their new classrooms, caught up with old friends, and met some new ones. Music teachers Mr. Griffin and Mr. Crouch jammed together on the piano and drums throughout the event, providing a lively, upbeat soundtrack throughout the evening.
All of us at Lane are looking forward to seeing your children on the first day of school next Monday, August 21st!

First Day of School Is Monday, August 21st!
The countdown is on! Just three more days until the first day of school! We are so excited to welcome all our students back next week. To make that day as smooth as possible, here are some important tips and reminders.
Student Arrival/Dismissal
Students arrive at and leave school in three main ways: riding a school bus, walking, or riding in cars (“Kiss and Ride”). It’s important that we know how students travel home each day so that we know where to send them at dismissal time. This year, each student will be given a backpack tag that identifies their method of transportation.
If you did not fill out the transportation form during Open House, please download it here and send it in with your child on the first day. We will provide your child with the appropriate tag.
Please Note:
On the first day, parents are welcome to bring their children into the building, or meet them in the building if they ride the bus, and walk them to their classroom or hallway. Once the bell rings at 9:20, all adults are invited to attend the PTA’s First Day Coffee in the Cafeteria.
Reminders:
-
Students may not be dropped off before 9:05 a.m., when our doors open. There is NO supervision prior to that time.
- Starting at 9:05 a.m., students enter the building and walk to their classrooms.
-
Students arriving after 9:20 a.m. are considered tardy and will need to be walked in by their parent/guardian to be signed in in the office (Door 1).
-
Student entry/exit doors:
- Buses arrive on the south side of the building, and bus riders enter and exit through Door 10.
- Kiss and Ride students enter and exit through Door 2 on the north side of the building.
- Walkers enter through Door 2 with car riders but exit through Door 5 (near the gym) at the end of the day.

-
Kiss and Ride:
- There is a specific traffic pattern during arrival (9:05 – 9:20 a.m.) and dismissal (4 – 4:20 p.m.). The main entrance on Beulah Street is CLOSED at these times.
-
Have your child unload and load on the curbside. Stay in your car for your safety. All Kiss and Ride parents are expected to be in the Kiss and Ride line.
-
Be respectful of the pacing of the line. Do not try to pass other cars in the line.
-
Do not park on Kingstowne Commons Drive or in neighborhoods adjacent to the school grounds to wait for your child. Use only the official Kiss and Ride lane. Do not drop off or pick up your child anywhere else.
-
Do not use your cell phone while in the Kiss and Ride area during arrival or dismissal.
Transportation Patience and Safety
Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families being patient as they wait for their children’s buses.
If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2150 with any additional questions. For any concerns after hours (after 5:30 p.m.), contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000. |

 Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 23rd, 6 – 8 p.m.
Please make plans to join us for Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 23rd, from 6 to 8 p.m. This event is very important for parents and guardians, as it offers a chance to meet teachers and hear directly from them about plans for the year ahead and classroom policies.
We will offer two sessions during the evening so those with multiple children at Lane will be able to visit more classrooms. In addition, we will offer the following presentations that you may wish to attend:
- Information on social/emotional learning and support, presented by our counselors, school psychologist, and social worker;
- Math and literacy information, presented by our math and literacy resource teachers;
- An orientation for new families, presented by our family liaisons.
Each session will be presented three times – at 5:30, 6:15, and 7 – so you can attend all three if you are interested.
Here is the full schedule for the event:
5:30 – 6 p.m.: Family Information Sessions
- Clinical Team (counselors, social worker, school psychologist) – Library
- Literacy and Math Resource Teachers (Location to be determined)
- New Family Orientation with Family Liaisons – Cafeteria
6 – 6:45 p.m.: Classroom Session 1 in individual classrooms

Please note that Back-to-School Night is designed for adults only and that childcare will not be available. If you bring your children with you, they will need to remain with you throughout the evening.
Required Back-to-School Forms
Our First Day Packets are all virtual this year. You can find the required forms (except for the Emergency Care Form) and other information on the Virtual First Day Packet page on our school website.
These forms must be reviewed, updated (if needed), and signed through your ParentVUE account or using a paper form (if available):
If you’re using a paper form, please return it to school or scan it and email it to our registrar Jami O’Hagan at jjohagan@fcps.edu.
Emergency Care Form
Thank you to all the parents and guardians who signed off on their child’s Emergency Care Form for the new school year at Open House last night. If you were not able to attend this event, you will receive a copy of this very important form on the first day of school. Please review it, update it (if needed), sign it, and return it as soon as possible.
Additional Optional Forms
Thank you for your prompt action and your support!
ParentVUE Makes Updates Easy
This year, FCPS is offering a new online option where parents can easily update their child’s information. The Online Verification Update packet (OVU) allows enrolling parents to review and update phone numbers, emergency contacts, and health information (such as health conditions and immunizations) for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Once you have signed into your ParentVUE account, simply select the “Student Info” tab and click on “Edit Information.”
If you need to set up your ParentVUE account, you can create one online via the FCPS ParentVUE Registration page. If you need help creating a SIS ParentVUE account, this video walks you through the steps. You can also find out more about SIS ParentVUE on the FCPS website.
If you need a new registration code, contact family liaison Melanie Crosby Hardy at macrosby@fcps.edu.

Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights
Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.
In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available — a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.
Get more information and view the 2023-24 Opt-Out Booklets.
