Background

Glasgow Middle School is the largest middle school in FCPS and such a large student population creates unique challenges.

In the 2022-2023 school year, Glasgow enrolled 1,873 students. Due to the addition of the modular unit, capacity was recorded at 94%. Without the modular unit, capacity was at 107%. There are too many students currently enrolled for the school to function optimally.

FCPS Policy 8120, updated in 2022, specifies “the right size” of different educational environments in the following:

“SIZE AND LOCATION: The preferred maximum sizes, absent any extraordinary circumstance, for new school buildings are; 38 classrooms (approximately 950 student program capacity) for elementary, 1,350 student program capacity for middle (grades 7-8), and 2,500 student program capacity for high school. Schools shall be located in accordance with the approved CIP and shall be constructed in accordance with the approved educational specifications."

On July 13, 2023, the School Board approved a motion that enabled staff to begin the community engagement identified in School Board Policy 8130 and Regulation 8130, for Local School Boundaries and Program Assignments.

The next opportunity for public input on this process will be later this year. Community meetings will be held for all schools and communities identified in the boundary scope.

Information to address questions and feedback has been posted to the Glasgow Capacity Challenges webpage. Please sign up for the project mailing list. Communication about this ongoing work will also be shared by the school.
