🐝Halley Hornet Happenings

welcome back to school image with rainbows

Hello Halley Families!

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! We are very excited to have our hornets back for the first day of school on Monday, August 21st.

Staff and teachers have been busy planning for your return and working hard to make sure the school year is filled with exciting and engaging learning opportunities.  We will continue implementing a sound instructional program, with a focus on literacy, math and science instruction.  We will also have a focus on ensuring regular school attendance and creating a positive school culture for our students, families, and staff.

We will open our doors each day at 9:10am. We will have many staff on hand to assist students off the bus, guide them to their classrooms and support as they are welcomed back into the building. During the first several days of school, our staff will be reinforcing routines and procedures to ensure student safety. We anticipate slightly longer kiss and ride lines and perhaps some bus delays as we get back into our routines. We thank you in advance for your flexibility and patience.

Parents are invited to walk their student(s) to class on the first two days of school only.

After day two, we ask you to please say your goodbyes at the entrance of Halley, bus stop, or from the car at Kiss & Ride. We will ask parents refrain from walking their children down to their classrooms. This will help build student independence and reinforce routines during arrival.

On behalf of our entire Halley staff – Welcome Back to School!!!

Blessings and Joy, Mrs. Peerman, Ms. Hubbard, and Mrs. Johnson-Tyler

Information for 2023-2024

Halley ES Kiss and Ride Registration Form 2023-24

Halley ES has an established area called Kiss & Ride, which is designed as a safe place for adults in private vehicles to load and unload children. To ensure safety for everyone, observe the following rules when loading and unloading children:

  • Teach children how to buckle and unbuckle seat belts so they can do it themselves.
  • Practice so that children can open and close the car door independently.
  • Load and unload from the passenger side of the car only.
  • Remain in the driver’s seat unless assisting your child with bulky items.
  • Vehicles equipped with child protection locks may require assistance for your child to exit the vehicle. If so, please roll down your window and ask the teacher on duty.
  • Children may not load/unload items from the trunk/rear compartment of the vehicle.
  • Parking in the parking lot and calling to children to cross between cars is not permitted.
  • Parking in the Kiss & Ride lane and leaving your car unattended is not permitted.
  • Follow the directions and guidance of the staff on duty.

**If you will be using Halley’s Kiss & Ride service for afternoon dismissal at least 3 days per week on a consistent basis, parents must complete the

Halley ES Kiss and Ride Registration Form 2023-24 to receive your assigned Kiss & Ride window display.

Parents who accessed kiss and ride last school year will need to register again as new decal numbers will be distributed to each family.

Note: Parents who will walk home with their child should also register for a kiss and ride number.  If your child will walk home alone without adult supervision, you do not have to register for afternoon kiss and ride as your child will simply be dismissed to exit the building at 4:05 PM.

School Meals

Breakfast and Lunch

Preparing for and Paying for Meals at School

Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.

Paying With MySchoolBucks

The best way to purchase meals (and keep food lines moving!) is to use MySchoolBucks. Set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today. Our front office staff can help with any questions.

MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically, as needed. Families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account. Visit FCPS’ Food and Nutrition webpage for more information.

Find school menus here.

School Year Calendar

Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances.

Days marked in pink are holidays for students but working days for teachers and staff.

Make Sure Your Child Is Up-to-Date on Vaccines

All students are required to be immunized against certain communicable diseases to attend school in Virginia. It is important for all students to receive the required immunizations.

Please talk with your family healthcare provider about whether or not your children are up to date on their vaccines before the new school year begins. Submit updated immunization records to your school as soon as possible. Get more information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation.
