Message from Mrs. Burke

Burke

First Day of School Monday, August 21, is the first day of school for the 2023-24 school year.

FCPS parents, students, and staff members are invited to share their favorite pictures or videos from the first day of school on social media using the hashtag #FirstDayFairfax. We will share some of the photos on FCPS Facebook and Instagram.

1. Attendance

Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.

Parents/guardians must contact the attendance office (703-924-8080)/ Edison High.Attendance@fcps.edu to report attendance; the online attendance portal will no longer be accepted to notify our school of your student’s absence.  Edison is not monitoring or accepting any absences submitted via the on-line form. Due to an excessive number of forgeries, the online attendance form is currently disabled.

Below is a quick guide for reporting all-day absences, late arrivals, and early check-outs from school.

2.  Kiss and Ride Procedures

If you are driving your student to school, Kiss and Ride locations are doors #5 and #13. We encourage you to send your student to school the way that he/she will always go to school (i.e. riding the bus, walking, or utilizing Kiss & Ride). This will help your student know what to expect every day of the school year.  Please follow the directions of staff members, and ALWAYS drive slowly.  Remember that students and staff are in the parking lot.

When driving your student to school or picking up after school, please follow the procedures below:

  • For morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up: if you’re exiting onto Van Dorn Street, please make a right turn ONLY.
  • For morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up: If you are exiting onto Franconia Road, at the entrance WITHOUT the traffic light (closest to Van Dorn Street), please make a right turn ONLY.
  • Please use the designated Kiss & Ride areas: Door 5 (in the back of school, accessible on Edison Road) and Door 13 (Van Dorn Street side of the school).
  • Please have your student ready to get out the car.
  • Please pull up as far as you can; do not drop your student off on Franconia or Van Dorn.
  • Please make sure you give yourself enough time to arrive in case of traffic delays.
  • Please watch your speed on school grounds – the speed limit is 10 mph.
  • Please be kind to other drivers and students.
  • Consider dropping off your student no later than 7:50 AM. It will be an easy in-and-out with much less congestion.

The building opens to students at 7:30 AM.  Students need to be in their classrooms, ready to learn, by 8:10 AM.

We appreciate your assistance to keep Edison HS safe.

3.  Transportation Patience and Safety

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.

If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Contact the Transportation Office at [703-466-2150] with any additional questions. For any concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE.

Salad Bar

4.  Salad Bar Added

This year students will have access to a salad bar that will include multiple fruits and vegetables along with other cold entrees.  The salad bar will also have proteins that can be added to the salads

5. 🍎 Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications Available

According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost.

Families in FCPS that are earning less than 185% of the poverty level can receive meals for their students at no cost. Families should complete the application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits.

Apply on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage

6.  Update Contact Information to Receive Messages From FCPS

Be among the first to know about weather closings, bus delays, and other critical communications from FCPS and our school by providing your cell phone number and email in SIS ParentVUE. Make sure you complete the Emergency Care Form for your child every year and update when necessary.

To update your contact information in ParentVUE, click the “Online Packets” tab in the upper right of the screen, then select the “Online Verification/Update” form in the drop down menu. Click “Begin Packet.”

Parents who do not have a SIS ParentVUE account may still communicate updates via the normal paper process. They may also print and complete a blank Emergency Care Information Form with updates and submit it to the front office.

7.  What Is Schoology?

Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online; to provide a secure forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects; and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized, and it keeps the class connected.

A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:

  • Your child’s classes.
  • Your child’s upcoming assignments.
  • School, class, and group announcements.

Parent accounts will be available after August 21. To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS/ParentVUE account. Get more information on how to login and use Schoology.

8.  Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available — a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Get more information and view the 2023-24 Opt-Out Booklets.

9. Eagle SOAR

Our Eagle SOAR event will be held on Friday, Aug. 25, from 4:30-6:00 p.m just outside the football field. The event is open to ALL students, families, and staff members. Parent groups and student resources, such as clubs and activities will be in attendance, to give more information on how students can get involved. There will be yard games, outdoor activities, and food available for purchase. We want to celebrate our students coming back to school this year and invite our community to do the same. We’d also like to encourage all students and parents to stay for the first home football game, immediately afterward at 7 p.m.!

Wear your school colors, and come out to show Eagle Pride!

10. Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy Services for High School Students

Teletherapy services continue to be available for all FCPS high school students at no cost. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hazel’s highly-qualified therapists specialize in speaking “teen.”

Caregivers must first opt in their students to access Hazel Health. Then, a caregiver or school counselor, social worker, or psychologist can refer the student to Hazel for services. Learn more on the FCPS teletherapy webpage.
