Coming This Fall: One School, One Book 2023

This fall Deer Park Elementary is inviting everyone in our school community to participate in an exciting reading adventure: One School, One Book! The program is designed to engage everyone in our community in a shared read aloud experience. This means students, parents, teachers, office staff, custodial staff, cafeteria staff and administrators!

This year we will be reading Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. We are asking all parents to read aloud Wishtree to their children following an established reading schedule for 4 weeks (Mondays-Thursdays). Discussion questions will be provided for each night’s reading so that families can start a conversation about the book’s events with their children. For those busy nights when parents do not have time to read, the chapter readings will be recorded and posted to Schoology for all students to access. A detailed reading schedule will be made available. Students will be invited to answer trivia questions about each night’s reading the following day in school.

Deer Park will be selling paperback copies of Wishtree at a discounted retail price ($7.64) during our Open House on August 17th in the front lobby. We will be accepting only credit cards, ApplePay, or checks made out to Deer Park Elementary (NO CASH). Books will also be available for purchase Monday, August 21st through Monday, August 28th; see Mrs. Farfan in the library.

We are excited to share this reading journey with you and hope that you will join us!

A bit about Wishtree

Trees can’t tell jokes, but they can certainly tell stories. . . .

wishtree

Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood “wishtree“—people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red’s branches.  Along with a crow named Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red’s hollows, this “wishtree” watches over the neighborhood.

You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in. Not everyone is welcoming, and Red’s experience as a wishtree is more important than ever.

Funny, deep, warm, and nuanced, this is Katherine Applegate at her very best—writing from the heart, and from a completely unexpected point of view.

Deer Park PTA Information www.deerparkespta.org

Hello everyone!

Anticipation is high as we approach the first day of school, teacher assignments, and Open House! The PTA has been busy over the summer preparing to have fun & memorable events as well as helpful & effective programs this school year.

Even though we love it when parents/guardians attend meetings, head committees, and volunteer for events, joining the PTA does not commit you to any of these things. Joining the PTA is a simple and easy way to support students at Deer Park. Rates are unchanged from last year:  $10 individual, $15 family (2 adults), $8 faculty. Member gifts this year will be a magnetic Deer Park clip and should be distributed the first month of school. DPES PTA members receive National, Virginia, and Fairfax County PTA memberships, a member gift (2 for family memberships), and a School Directory.

SPIRIT WEAR

The PTA decided to go a new direction with Spirit Wear and will be using Squad Locker instead of placing orders twice a year. While a bit more expensive in some cases, items can be purchased year-round and shipped directly to homes. There are generally several logo options for each piece of merchandise. There are some initial designs posted but we can upload new designs for events or because our families want something we're not offering yet. We are looking for someone to manage the store (if you love graphic design this might be for you!) and also need community feedback on the current designs and products. Please email pta.deerparkes@gmail.com with any Squad Locker suggestions!

Cheers to a great year with lots of fun new Bucky merch!
