This week we welcomed some of our staff back into the building. Our hallways are buzzing with positivity and excitement. Staff are preparing their classrooms and office spaces to greet students. As we've mentioned in past weeks, there are many events happening next week to kick off the school year. As a reminder, our first day of school is Monday, August 21st. Please see events listed below.
Kindergarten Playdate - August 14 - 4:00pm - 5:00pm
- Welcome new families to Bucknell
- Families and students meet Kindergarten teachers
- Build community amongst the rising Kindergarten students and families
Welcome Walks - August 16 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm
- Welcome all families to the new school year
- Families are personally introduced to their child's teacher and and other Bucknell staff at their homes
- Families have an opportunity to talk one on one with their child's teacher and Bucknell staff
Back 2 Bucknell - August 17 - 4:00pm - 6:30pm

- Celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year
- Build community by connecting staff, students and families in an informal setting
- Back to School Night presentations provide important information about the new school year, to include grade level curriculum overview and a Year-at-a-Glance overview
- Back to School Night presentations are in a group setting with grade level teachers and families of students in that grade level
Family Conferences - End of September - Specific Date/Time Determined by Family and Teacher
- One on One conversation with teacher and families about the student's adjustment to school and progress in their academics. Teachers will share the beginning of the year reading and math assessment data.
- Teachers will review Back 2 Bucknell information for families
- Families will be able to choose day, time, and mode of conversation (phone, in-person, or virtual)

Teacher Communication Coming Monday, August 14th!
All families will receive communication from their homeroom teachers on Monday, August 14th. This will come via email and Talking Points. Your child's teacher will be introducing themselves to you, welcoming you to the upcoming events next week, and reminding students of their lunch pin codes.
We can't wait for you and your child to meet their new teacher!

FREE Breakfast & Lunch for All Students at Bucknell
 Bucknell ES will be participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) as implemented under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. All students enrolled at Bucknell will be provided a nutritious meal for breakfast and lunch each day at NO charge. Your child will NOT be required to submit a meal application form to receive meals at no charge. Families will receive communication about CEP, including contact information for any questions.
Please review your child's lunch pin number with them. Their teacher will also email the pin number before school starts.

Bucknell is Now On Instagram!
 Bucknell is now on Instagram! Families, staff, and community members are encouraged to follow us for the latest updates about the amazing things we are doing for students. We intend to use our Instagram account to provide you with even more wonderful pictures and stories including experiences from teachers and the ability to ride along on some of our field trips. We will also be maintaining a Facebook page, if you prefer to follow there!

Rising Kindergarten students and families will get to connect and play, as well as meet the Kindergarten teachers. Join us on Monday, August 14th from 4pm - 5pm at the Bucknell Playground. We look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome Walks - August 16
We are excited to continue our annual tradition of Welcome Walks! Your child’s new teacher will be “walking” to greet you and your child outside of your home. This event will be Wednesday, August 17th from 4pm - 6pm. Please expect an email from your child's teacher during the week of August 14th with more information.

On August 17th from 4pm - 6:30pm we will welcome students and families into Bucknell to meet their child's teacher, see their new classroom, drop off school supplies (if needed) and listen to updates about the new school year. Families will also hear Back to School presentations, which is information regarding the curriculum and daily life of Bucknell. After visiting the classroom, families will be invited outside for FREE food, DJ, games, and an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of the school year.

Student Laptop/iPad Return
Did you check out a device for summer learning? We are so glad you’ve been able to continue your learning! As summer is winding down, we need to prepare our devices for the 23-24 school year.
Please return your device to Bucknell no later than Friday, August 11. If your student is attending a summer program, their device will be collected at the conclusion of the program. All other students with devices will please need to drop off the device at Bucknell by August 11. The office is open between 9:00am – 12:00pm for device drop off.

School Year Calendar
Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances.
- Days marked with blue Hs are student holidays.
- Days marked with orange Os are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings if only half marked).
- Days marked in pink are holidays for students, but working days for teachers and staff.
The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, and the start of each month coincides with the birth of a new moon. The date of Eid a- Fitr is regionally decided, which can lead to unexpected date changes. Eid al-Fitr is currently slated to begin at sunset on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, and last through sundown Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Tuesday is designated a half-O day, and Wednesday is a holiday, with all schools and offices being closed. If the day for Eid changes after the school year begins, the calendar may be adjusted.

Immunizationas and Records
Are Your Child’s Immunizations and Records Up to Date?
Immunizations are required for public school entry and help keep students protected from serious diseases. Many children missed their well check-ups and their recommended childhood vaccinations during recent years because of disruptions from COVID-19. It is critical to catch up to keep children healthy and ready for school.
While COVID-19 vaccinations are not required, many other immunizations are. Check with your students’ healthcare providers now to make sure they are up to date on their immunizations.
Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of clinics or contact your family’s healthcare provider. Appointments are required for most clinics.
Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations to provide to their school. Get more information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation to share with your child’s school.

Monday, August 21, is the first day of school for the 2023-24 school year. See the complete school year calendar.FCPS parents, students, and staff members are invited to share their favorite pictures or videos from the first day of school on social media using the hashtag #FirstDayFairfax. We will share some of the photos on FCPS Facebook and Instagram.
