Welcome Back!

Dear Cedar Lane Families,

I hope your summer has been restful and filled with moments that bring you joy. I am excited about my new role as Principal of Cedar Lane and to welcome students back in the building. As we begin the 2023-24 school year, I look forward to working with our students and families.  As I begin this journey, with the Cedar Lane community, I will have the opportunity to observe and learn the strengths, skills, and challenges of our school environment. I have a firm belief in high academic expectations for all students, engaging learning experiences, social and emotional support, and growth, and building meaningful relationships with both students and families. We are here to learn together, and to support each other in a safe and nurturing educational environment that challenges all our students to reach beyond their expectations.

Excellence, Equity and Opportunity is a commitment for all Fairfax County Public Schools, and the vision and mission at Cedar Lane aligns with that commitment. We are also committed to offering intensive support for emotional and/or behavioral needs and fostering our students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. The foundation of our work is in the belief of the importance of relationships and deeper learning opportunities for our students.  I am in the process of setting up individual meetings, with all Cedar Lane families, so that we can get to know each other a little better. I have met with some families already, and the collaboration and feedback has been awesome.  There will be a laser focus this year on attendance and students being in the classroom available for learning. I appreciate each of you for your partnership and support with this.

For your planning purposes, please see below for a list of dates, times, and information about important events for the beginning of the school year. CELL PHONES

FCPS has changed the cell phone policy for students.  Phones and accessories are to be silenced and put away during instructional periods.  Please see the updated Regulation below:

Phones must be silenced and put away during all instructional periods. Phone accessories are also to be silenced and away when phone use is prohibited. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, Internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Storage may be in a locker, backpack, pencil bag, etc., during classes. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. Teachers may allow usage of cell phone for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool, however one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs.   Parents, please partner with us in monitoring appropriate electronic device use during school.

I ask your help by requesting that you join the Cedar Lane PTSA. This organization helps our school provide the quality educational activities that your student deserves. Your support is CRUCIAL to our mission of helping to provide the school with the resources it needs to help each child be successful!  You can help in 2 ways:

The Cedar Lane PTSA partners with the school to provide many resources and opportunities that would not otherwise be available to students to ensure student success. Your support is crucial to our mission!  You can help in 2 very important ways:

  1. Donate to our No-Fuss Fundraiser through PayPal at https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/supportCLPTSA or through Venmo @Cedar-Lane. Checks are also welcome and can be made out to Cedar Lane PTSA and mailed to the school at 101 Cedar Lane SW, Vienna VA 22180.  Your donation helps fund: senior scholarships, field trips, academic equipment, updated technology and so much more! And the best part- we won’t: try to sell you candles, giftwrap or popcorn, make you run in ask or attend a gala!

  1. Join the PTSA!  Go to: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd-1w8HHzE0CbQf_tSo_wTbDBcrRO3SbXlMqvVj_O0mAiHAHQ/viewform?usp=pp_url and fill out the form then use the above payment methods to purchase memberships for parents/guardians and students.  For questions, please email (jmmin1@fcps.edu) or call Ms. Min (703-208-2420).

I am excited about the possibilities that this school year will bring and proud to be a Cedar Lane Panther! I look forward to working collectively as a family to ensure that our students are provided with the best educational experiences possible to be creative and critical thinkers, global citizens, and successful in their future endeavors.
