From the Library

The Herndon HS Summer Reading Challenge, created by the library and the Global Citizens Book Club, is open to all incoming and current Herndon HS students, and is now in session! Students can join the GCBC Schoology Group at F4BT-W6TC-5G8JD for details. The challenge runs through August 31. Prizes will be given to students who get 5 in a row, OR who complete the entire bingo board. Students can claim their prizes when we return to school by showing the library team their online bingo form.

Students have access to hundreds of eBooks and e-audiobooks all summer long. From fairfax.mackinvia.com, they can log in with their school Google credentials and explore the catalog. Additionally, SYNC Audiobooks for Teens is back with their free audiobook program. Two titles are available each week, and change over to two new ones each Thursday. Once you’ve downloaded a SYNC title, it’s yours to keep forever. You can get the complete list of titles, and the week that they are available, here.

Save the date! This year’s National Book Festival will take place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Saturday, August 12, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (doors open at 8:30 a.m.). Information continues to be added to the Library of Congress’s website here.

Mental Wellness Summer Supports

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 26 to August 4. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Safety and Security Updates

Anonymous Tip Line Puts Safety First

If you or your child have concerns or information relating to feeling unsafe in any way at school, we encourage you to reach out to a member of the security or administrative team so that we may quickly address the issue.  Students and parents may also utilize the FCPS Office of Safety and Security safety tip line, that you can access anonymously online, by text (888-777; Keyword TIP FCPS), or by phone (571-423-2020).

If your tip is an emergency and immediate assistance is necessary, please dial 911.

Students, staff, and community members should report school safety issues such as threats, unsafe or dangerous situations, illegal drug activity, theft, gang activity, the existence of weapons, vandalism, and concerns about student wellness. Tip line users may identify themselves or remain anonymous.

Concerns that do not impact the safety of our schools—concerns or information about programs, regulations, or policies—can be sent to the FCPS ombudsman online, at 571-423-4014, or ombudsman@fcps.edu

Support for Families During the Summer

Parent Information Phone Lines

FCPS language lines are available in eight different languages to assist parents who do not speak English as their first language. A school system employee will respond to your call in your preferred language within 24 hours, Monday through Friday. The caller will provide you with the requested information, arrange for you to speak with the appropriate school employee, or connect you with the resource that you are looking to find. Click HERE for the FCPS Parent Information Phone Lines.

Community Liaisons

Community Liaisons welcome families to FCPS and provide information and resources about Fairfax County. Bilingual community liaisons support student registrars by providing families with information about school and community services offered in Fairfax County. Community liaisons also help parents fill out forms and complete applications for:

  • free and reduced-price meals
  • recreation programs
  • health insurance
  • adult education classes
  • job training
  • other programs

Families new to FCPS can attend Getting to Know Fairfax County Public Schools: An Orientation Session for Parents, which ensures a smooth transition to the FCPS community.
