Sub and Save the Day!

Oak View has a strong group of substitute teachers and we are always looking for kind and caring substitute teachers and substitute instructional assistants to add to our pool! Substitutes ensure our students continue to thrive when teachers and instructional assistants need to be out of the classroom. Substitute teaching is a great opportunity for future teachers, stay-at-home parents, retirees, college students, part-time employees, and anyone who wants to make a difference!

We provide substitutes with a flexible work schedule that a substitute teacher or substitute instructional assistant can tailor to their needs. This includes choosing the grade level(s) and subjects a substitute would like to teach, schools they would like to work at, and more!

Read here for more information and consider attending the hiring fair this Wednesday, July 26.

Image of LEAP

Fairfax County Public Library - LEAP

FCPS is partnering with Fairfax County Public Libraries to provide Library Equity Access Passes (LEAP) to any FCPS student.

WHAT IS LEAP?

All students (PreK-12) in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) have LEAP accounts at FCPL. These public library virtual accounts allow students to check out up to three items at a time for six weeks each (no renewals).

WHY IS LEAP AWESOME?

  • A student only needs their name, not a physical library card, to check out materials.
  • LEAP accounts never charge fines or fees.
  • A student can have a LEAP account as well as a standard library account (application online and in library branches). Standard accounts allow users to place holds on materials and access FCPL digital resources such as eBooks and databases.

VDOE Learning Grants - Available to Families

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is now accepting applications from parents for tutoring microgrants for their children through the K-12 Learning Acceleration Grants program.

The program was created to help Virginia families address the impact of the pandemic on student learning. It provides $1,500 grants to parents of school-age children for tutoring in specific subjects. Children from homes with family incomes at 300% or less of the federal poverty level may qualify for $3,000 grants.

Available services include in-person, online, and hybrid tutoring provided one-on-one or in small group or large group settings. The first step in the process is to visit VDOE’s K-12 Learning Acceleration Grants page and create an application account.

Good News Around FCPS

Oak View is glad to share the good news happening around FCPS in this section. Each week check back for happenings around FCPS!

With summer in full swing, many students are busy soaking up the rays, relaxing or hanging out with friends. However, recent middle school graduate Myra Goyal is busy volunteering in her neighborhood.

Callahan Rogers, a 2023 graduate of Cedar Lane School, has been selected as the recipient of the 2023 Fairfax County School Board Character Award.

The Madison Warhawks have a new award to add to their ever-growing collection of championship trophies.

When Alix Truong talks about her life, it’s usually in terms of the sports she has played. There’s her introduction to tennis at age 6, soccer two years later, then a stint on a volleyball team her freshman year.

Five students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology in Alexandria were named finalists in the Conrad Innovation Challenge for the walking cane they designed with the help of visually impaired people from the Herndon Senior Center.

Three D.C.-area baseball prospects — James Madison High School’s Bryce Eldridge, Westfield High School’s Jonny Farmelo and University of Maryland’s Matt Shaw — were selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
