We are looking forward to welcoming our kindergarteners and any families new to Union Mill for an informal Scavenger Hunt on Thursday, August 3rd. For any families not yet registered, please contact Stephanie Kohout, our school register at snkohout@fcps.edu .

With the start of the year around the corner, please be sure to check out our school supply list for each grade level here. For families interested in ordering a supply kit from the PTA, it can be accessed here.

The 23 - 24 FCPS School Year Calendar can be accessed here. We encourage families to review the calendar when considering trips or preplanned absences.  

Kindergarten and New Family Scavenger Hunt

We are delighted to welcome our newest bears to Union Mill. All kindergarteners and all students new to Union Mill may come with their families to participate in an informal scavenger hunt on either or both of the following days. 

  • Thursday, August 3rd - 2:00 - 3:15 pm
  • Tuesday, August 8th - 9:30 - 10:45 am

Families can anticipate the scavenger hunt taking approximately 30 minutes. Following the scavenger hunt, students can head outside for popsicles with our principals. 

Save the Dates for Open House and Back to School Nights

Open House will be held on Friday, August 18th in the morning. This will be an opportunity for students and families to come and meet their teacher, see their classroom and drop off any school supplies.  

Back to School Night will be held on August 28th and August 29th. It is an opportunity for families to meet the teacher to learn about expectations, routines, procedures and curriculum for the year. 

  • Monday, August 28th – Grades 3rd - 6th at 5:30 pm
  • Tuesday, August 29th – Kindergarten - 2nd Grade at 5:30 pm

*More specific details and times will be shared for both events in upcoming Family Newsletters. 

Registration for 23-24 School Year 

If your child will be attending Union Mill Elementary for the 2023-2024 school year and you have not completed any registration paperwork please contact Stephanie Kohout, 703-322-8504 or snkohout@fcps.edu, as soon as you are able. Doing so will help ensure that Union Mill ES is allocated the required staffing from FCPS for a successful start to the 23-24 school year.

Popsicles with the Principals

Students and families are welcome to come to the UMES playground to reconnect with Mr. Hawk and to meet Mr. Williams and Mrs. Graham. The PTA will be supporting Popsicles with the Principals following the kindergarten and new student scavenger hunt on the following dates: 

  • Thursday, August 3rd - 3:00 - 4:00 pm 
  • Tuesday, August 8th - 10:30 - 11:30 am 

Come spend time with our new assistant principals and Mr. Hawk after the scavenger hunts at the PTA-sponsored Popsicles with the Principals. Popsicles are FREE to kids! There will also be opportunities to buy Spirit Wear for the upcoming year and to sign up to become a PTA member.
