Little Run News: 6/16/23

Dear Roadrunner Families,

It’s hard to believe that the school year has ended, and what a tremendous year we have had!  Our students’ growth physically, emotionally, and academically is incredible! We are so proud of our students and staff for their tremendous work, efforts, and enthusiasm. Learning starts at home, and we appreciate the amazing children you share and entrust with us, as we know they are your pride and joy.

We are always sad to say farewell to our students and will particularly miss our sixth graders, who will move on to middle school in the fall.  We wish them the best and look forward to hearing about the amazing things they continue to do individually and collectively.

Our work during the summer never ends as we will host our Preschool Autism Class (PAC) and our Overtime Athletics Program. We are also excited to share in next week’s NYC a host of events here at school this summer, including book checkout opportunities and playdates for students.  Our summer office hours are listed below, and we are happy to assist families as needed. We will also continue to introduce new staff throughout the summer.

Throughout the summer, teams of teachers will come together to begin planning for the new school year. Lesley Hassen, our new assistant principal, and I will support staff with learning about Professional Learning Communities at Work, Positive Behavior Approach, School Improvement Planning, and Equity, and Family Engagement. It is our hope to continue our partnership with the PTA to engage in learning together around these and many other topics.

As we kick off summer, we want to thank you for all that you do for our school community!  I wish each of you a safe, healthy, rejuvenating summer filled with great memories. On behalf of the entire Little Run Staff, thank you for an amazing 2022-2023 school year and we look forward to welcoming our returning students back to school on Monday, August 21!

We hope you have a wonderful summer and look forward to welcoming you back in the fall!

Stay well,

Christie Yarn

6th grade promotion ceremony

Little Run is so proud of our 6th graders! We celebrated their promotion ceremony on Tuesday with family, friends, staff members and students.  It was great to have our promotion ceremony back at Little Run and celebrate all of the 6th graders accomplishments as they head off to middle school. Congratulations and good luck next year!!

End of Year Celebrations

Many of our classes celebrated the end of the year this week! They had fun both inside and outside as they reflected on all that they have learned and how much they have grown this school year.  We cannot wait to see everyone in the fall!

Welcome New Staff to Little Run!

Welcome to the new staff that will be joining us in the fall of 2023!  We are excited to continue to share new faces throughout the summer as they have been extended offers but still need to finish the onboarding process.

🥗 Don't forget your student's Lunch Balance!

It’s a busy time of year, and we know there are many priorities on families’ plates. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important for families to remember to check their students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families who earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2023-24 school year will be available near the end of August.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2022-23 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price lunch.

If you are interested in helping to relieve lunch debt for families currently going through the FRM application process, please donate to Educate Fairfax.

Mental Wellness Summer Supports

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 26 to August 4. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.

All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Consultations can be requested online or by calling 703-503-2520 and leaving a message.
