Happy Last day of school

Administrator Avenue

Dear Bee Families,

As we approach the end of another remarkable year at HES, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments and growth of our wonderful students. It has been an absolute privilege to lead and serve this incredible school and witness the dedication and enthusiasm displayed by both our students and our exceptional staff. Throughout the year, we have worked tirelessly to create a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that fosters academic excellence and personal development.

We are proud to share that our students have achieved numerous milestones this year, both academically and socially. From the enthusiasm they exhibited during our career fair to the captivating performances in our spring music concert, their accomplishments have been truly remarkable. Moreover, our dedicated teachers have gone above and beyond to provide engaging lessons and foster a love for learning in our students. Their commitment to education has been instrumental in shaping our students' minds and preparing them for future success.

As we bid farewell to the academic year, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the parents for your unwavering support and partnership. Your active involvement in your child's education has been instrumental in creating a strong and vibrant school community. We are grateful for the trust you have placed in us and for allowing us to be a part of your child's educational journey. Together, we have laid a solid foundation for their future endeavors.

In closing, we would like to express our utmost pride in our students, staff, and the entire HES community. It is through our collective efforts that we have achieved great heights this year. We wish all our students a restful and enjoyable summer break, filled with exploration, creativity, and quality time with loved ones. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another incredible year of learning and growth.

Warmest regards,

Educate Fairfax project is a rousing success at Herndon Elementary!

This past Fall, art teacher, Marianne Estornell, received a grant from Educate Fairfax called Art-trepreneurs: Board Game Design. This project was proposed for 5th grade students to create their own board games based on an existing game, a reinterpretation of a board game or to create a new concept. Students employed their Portrait of a Graduate skills to plan, collaborate, and give constructive feedback to their peers.

Students explored the artwork of artist, Raynard Scott, from the Navajo Nation who reimagined a monopoly game based on the Dineh. His gameboard is made of silver and inlaid with precious and semi-precious stones. Raynard Scott’s Dinetah-poly won 2023 Best in Show at the world-famous Heard Museum Indian Market.

Students constructed their own game boards using pizza boxed and used a variety of materials to create game pieces, dice, cards, and other game mechanics. In addition, students designed and built Scribble Bots, inspired by their games. Once games were completed, students play-tested their games with their peers and learned constructive ways to make suggestions for improving their games. Lastly, students examined how board game designers publish their games to make them ready for sale.

This project was powered by the generosity of Educate Fairfax and Mrs. Estornell and the 5th grade class are truly grateful for this incredible opportunity.
