Congrats to Our Retiring Staff and Faculty
2023 Spartan Staff and Faculty Retirees: Jerry Mason, Dorothea (Dottie) Swaggard, Erin Wigginton.
Our 2023 staff and faculty retirees have a collective 116 years of service in education!
Jerry Mason served a total of 37 years in FCPS and prior to that, two years in Prince William County. Jerry taught Math, Physics and Chemistry. Subsequently he spent several years as a School Based Technology Specialist, and will end his career as West Springfield's Technology Support Specialist. Prolific not just in the classroom or the tech office, Jerry also coached soccer for 38 years at Osborne Park, Robinson Secondary and WSHS. Jerry plans to remain in the area to love on his kids and grandkids. We may even see him back in our Spartan hallways now and again during busy tech seasons.
Dorothea (Dottie) Swaggard has taught for 42 years, 30(+) of those years in FCPS. Dottie has spent much of her classroom time teaching Studio Art and Design, and Photography. She plans to dedicate this next phase of life to reengaging some of her favorite hobbies including hiking, painting, photography and yoga. She also hopes to travel and get back into cooking.
Dr. Erin Wigginton has taught for 35(+) years, 11 in FCPS. Her classroom time has featured U.S. History and Honors History courses, Government and Dual Enrollment Government. Erin is a college sports enthusiast and plans to spend lots of time rooting for her favorite ACC teams. She also plans to enjoy her grandchildren, two of which she'll move to Illinois to be near.
All of our retirees express their love for teaching and how much they'll miss it. At the same time, they iterate now was just the right time for them to retire.
We're grateful to these staff members for their years of dedicated service to the field of education and to our Spartan family. We wish them well in their next season of life.

Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:
- Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
- Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.
All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Consultations can be requested online or by calling 703-503-2520 and leaving a message.

Teletherapy services will continue to be available for all FCPS high school students at no cost this summer. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7am to 7pm. Hazel’s highly-qualified therapists specialize in speaking “teen.”

Take Tutor.com on the Road!
FCPS students will continue to have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com during the summer of 2023. Students are able to use Tutor.com during the summer to review and/or practice in subject areas of interest or need. Students may also choose to access other tools and services such as practice quizzes in a variety of subject areas as well as self-paced study courses for SAT/ACT preparation.
Visit the Summer Access Tutor.com webpage for more information on how to access the online service throughout the summer.
Looking Towards Next School Year
WSHS will host two events to kick off the school year: New Student Orientation and Spartan Open House. Both events will occur on August 17th. These will be opportunities for students and parents to prepare for the upcoming school year. We will publish more specific information later this summer.
Do You Have a Student Entering Seventh or 12th Grade This Fall?
Immunizations are required for all students entering seventh and 12th grades. Visit this Immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.
Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations. It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines, and 12th grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine.
Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

📘 Summer Reading Matters!
The Fairfax County Public Library understands the importance of summer reading. Summer learning loss, or the summer slide, is when children forget learned reading skills because they are no longer using them regularly. Reading and participating in engaging reading activities throughout the summer are two effective ways to combat summer learning loss.
Fairfax Library will kick off their annual summer reading program with Summer Reading Festivals:
Families can enjoy games and crafts, face painting, bounce houses, a mini zoo, caricatures, food, and other activities.
More information on Fairfax Library's Summer Reading Program will be available on June 16.
