Monday, June 19, is a holiday for FCPS employees. Schools and offices will be closed. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that word of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, effectively marking the end of slavery in the United States. Learn more about Juneteenth.
Dear Wakefield Forest Families,
Another school year has come to an end. We are very proud of the many achievements of our staff and students this year. It's particularly impressive that such amazing learning occurred during a full scale addition and renovation process.
Our students have engaged in meaningful learning experiences across the content areas and during specials. They have exercised their creativity and ingenuity during STEAM, Innovation Hour and Electives. We have seen them shine in musical performances, proudly display their art. These last few weeks have been filled with celebrations, Annie, musical performances, and fun activities.
We are grateful for our amazing parent volunteers, who have helped us with our WFES Fun Run, Family Culture Night, BINGO Night, Annie performances and many more fun activities. The involvement of our school community enhances our school in so many ways.
We appreciate our PTA Board, President Lisa Verne, Secretary Jen Webster, Treasurer Micha Ticatch, Academics Janelle Mehta, Volunteers Nudrit Salik, Legislative Kathleen Miller, and Fundraising Kathryn Ely for supporting our school's initiatives this year.
At sixth grade promotion this week, I shared the following quote from Pete the Cat's Groovy Guide to Life “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson...translated by Pete to – "The birds are singing. The sky is bright. The sun is shining, and I’m feeling alright!” These quotes connect me to gratitude. For all of the challenges that we have faced this year, there are many things for which I am truly grateful. While gratitude won’t help us to avoid hard times, but it will help us to brave them.
Thank you for trusting us to care for your child(ren) this year. We will send updates throughout the summer as we prepare for the 2023-24 school year.
We hope you have an amazing summer break!
Sharyn Prindle
Principal
Congratulations to Principal Sharyn Prindle on her recognition as the FCPS 2023 Region 5 Outstanding Principal at this year's FCPS Honors event, held at George Mason University Center for the Arts on June 14th.
Families and staff at Wakefield Forest are well-aware that building relationships and fostering a culture of belonging is of critical importance to Sharyn. Having led within the Wakefield Forest community since 2007, Sharyn has built lasting connections and is responsive to the diverse needs of students, staff, and current and former families. Since becoming the school's principal in 2016, she has prioritized social-emotional learning and mindfulness and fostered curiosity through STEAM education, 5th and 6th-grade electives, and Innovation Hour (a weekly opportunity for student exploration). She is the ultimate problem solver, using data and feedback to drive decisions. Her biggest joy comes from seeing the successes of her students.
We ended the school year with a whole school assembly and celebration!
Our grade 3-6 students take the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments each spring. These are the preliminary schoolwide scores.

Do you have a new neighbor with school age kids?
Please ask them to reach out to register as soon as possible. The number of teachers we are allocated for the school year is based on the number of students registered. In our current staffing shortage, it will be exceptionally challenging to hire over the summer if we have families register late.
Families can schedule a time to register by emailing Ms. Holmes at KSHolmes@fcps.edu.
We're very proud of our sixth graders and wish them well as they head of to middle school.
Our parents verse sixth grade kickball game was so much fun!
Final report cards were distributed to students today prior to dismissal. They will be available to view and download in SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE early next week.
The Fairfax County School Board voted unanimously to adopt FCPS’ 2023-30 strategic plan. The new plan serves as the division’s North Star, guiding our path forward to ensure excellence, equity, and opportunity for each and every FCPS student.
The strategic plan comprises five student-centered goals; measures to monitor the progress toward those goals; equity commitments to support each and every student with attaining those goals; and four pillars that identify what FCPS must do well in order to reach our goals for all students.
Strategic plan goals include:
- Goal 1: Every student will develop foundational academic skills, curiosity, and a joy for learning necessary for success in Pre-K through 12th grade.
- Goal 2: Every student will experience an equitable school community where student health and well-being are prioritized, and student voice is centered.
- Goal 3: Every student will acquire critical and creative thinking skills, meet/exceed high academic standards, and achieve their highest academic potential.
- Goal 4: Every student will have access to high-quality academic programming and resources to support their success.
- Goal 5: Every student will graduate ready to thrive in life after high school and with the skills to navigate, adapt, and innovate for a sustainable future.

Would you like to help welcome new families to Wakefield Forest Elementary School by being part of the Buddy Program for SY2023-2024?
What does it mean to be a Buddy Family? This summer, the PTA will match you (current WFES families) up with a new student and their family to help answer any questions they may have before starting school. If you can, you will meet in person before school starts to give the new student an opportunity to meet a new friend and have a familiar face to help them navigate the ins and outs of Wakefield Forest Elementary. You'll also be invited to help welcome new families at New Student Orientation in late August (exact details tbd). The buddy program is an easy way to help ensure our new families feel connected and welcomed to WFES.
If you are interested in becoming a Buddy Family, please send an email to Rebecca Gudicello at rebeccagudicello@gmail.com with the name of your student and their grade level for the 2023/2024 school year. Please sign up by July 1, 2023. We hope that you will join us for one of the most rewarding programs at WFES!!

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 26 to August 4. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:
- Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
- Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.
All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Consultations can be requested online or by calling 703-503-2520 and leaving a message.
