Woodson Drama at the Cappies!

Message from Dr. Floyd

Happy Last Day of School Woodson Families:

Today we celebrated the last day of the 2022-2023 school year. We have had quite a journey this year and I want to thank all our faculty, staff, students and parents for their partnership and commitment to our #oneWoodson community.

I also want to congratulate our very own Alexa Pugnetti, administrative assistant in the athletics office on winning the FCPS 2023 Outstanding School-Based Operational Employee!!!  We all knew it was well deserved, and we're thrilled that FCPS recognized her!!

A few things to highlight are the mental wellness consultations, summer office hours and upcoming dates for the 2023-24 school year.

Please remain connected over the summer via the school website and look for special issues of this newsletter as well as Schoology messages.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer filled with lots of adventures,

Dr. Floyd
Principal

7. Counselor Corner - News from Student Services

Take Care! Families in need of mental health support may secure a virtual mental wellness consultation through the FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services from June 26th to August 4th. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference to get support for concerns related to social/emotional wellness and academic support. Any middle or high school-age student may register for a session to get support for concerns such as mood, anxiety, peer or family concerns, transitional support and more. Complete this google form or call 703-503-2520 to schedule an appointment.

Congratulations to the Seniors of the Class of 2023! We were honored to support their journey and wish them the best. Final transcripts were submitted to colleges by June 16th, based on requests noted in the FCPS Senior Survey they completed in May. Should plans change, they should contact Student Services at 703-503-4623.

Rising Seniors, members of the Class of 2024! Students received an email this week from their school counselor sharing summer instructions for planning for next year. Please discuss the instructions and recommendations with your student so they may be as prepared as possible for the start of senior year. The Senior Padlet has a wealth of information and helpful resources and will be updated for the class of 2024 soon. The common app opens on Tuesday, August 1st, so students should get ready for college application season! Since Common App essays are available now, this is a wise activity to work on this summer.

We suggest talking to your rising senior about which three sessions they attended during Junior Focus Day in May. The sessions are located on the Junior Focus Day padlet, with notes of shared by the presenter. All students started the day with an overview of the Senior Prep Guide which shares next steps to the college-application process. We hope that our juniors found the day helpful as they begin to think more seriously about their plans for after graduation.

We wish our entire Cavalier Community a restful and enjoyable summer break! Here’s to another year completed. We look forward to seeing everyone again in August!

8. Digital PSAT Replaces Paper in Fall 2023

This October, the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) will be administered in Fairfax County in a digital format. Some testing accommodations are administered differently for digital tests than for paper/pencil tests. See information about accommodations for students with disabilities.

PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day

The district will offer access to the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day for rising 10th through 12th grade students at no cost to families. Exams will be held at each high school on Wednesday, October 11th.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities and English Learners

Because these exams are operated by the College Board, students do not automatically receive testing accommodations or supports. If you have a student with disabilities entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade; or have an English Learner (EL) student entering 12th grade; please review the accommodations request process and/or EL support request process and return forms to Kathleen Crosson (kpcrosson@fcps.edu) by Tuesday, August 8th.

Find out more about SAT assessments and PSAT assessments.

11. Woodson Staff Member Wins FCPS 2023 Outstanding School-Based Operational Employee

Alexa Pugnetti

The Outstanding School-Based Operational Employee Award recognizes school-based operational employees who have made unique and exceptional contributions to FCPS. Recipients, both school-based and nonschool-based, demonstrate commitment and foster cooperative relationships with colleagues and in the community.

Congratulations to Alexa Pugnetti, our Athletics Office Administrative Assistant for winning this amazing distinction.

Woodson High School has its own “Ask Alexa,” which does even more than the popular worldwide device. Alexa is a thorough, resourceful, and helpful employee, who meticulously keeps the Activities Office running smoothly. Her knowledge of who to contact when issues arise goes beyond a contact book of phone numbers or email addresses. She is continually building rapport and trust with everyone she encounters. When she isn’t sitting at her desk in the Activities Office, you can find her covering classes for teachers, mopping up spills on the floor, being the first responder to radio calls, and even planning graduation. “Hey Alexa, did you know you’re the glue that holds athletics, activities, and the school together?”

12. Congratulations to Woodson's Retirees

Congratulations to the following staff members celebrating their retirement.  They made a huge impact on our students, staff and Woodson community!

  • Sharon Anderson, Librarian
  • Beth Gross, School Counselor
  • Susie Hamrock, Health and PE Teacher
  • Debbie Pardo, Educational Interpreter
  • Claire Stern, Instructional Assistant

13. Stadium Complex Closed for Summer Work

The stadium field and track will be closed for use until further notice. We are hoping to be open for business by mid-August. The Student Activities Office is working on plans for all of our programs while the stadium is closed.

Please do not use the parking lot close to the stadium entrance, it will be closed from June 9th-August 10th (see map below).

Thank you for your patience!

14. Mental Wellness Summer Supports

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 26 to August 4. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.

All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Consultations can be requested online or by calling 703-503-2520 and leaving a message.

15. Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy Services

Teletherapy services will continue to be available for all FCPS high school students at no cost this summer. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hazel’s highly-qualified therapists specialize in speaking “teen.”

Caregivers must first opt in their students to access Hazel Health. Then, a caregiver or school counselor, social worker, or psychologist can refer the student to Hazel for services. Learn more on the FCPS teletherapy webpage
