Principal's Corner

Grad Pic

Greetings Key Families,

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming back some of our Key alumni who are graduating from Lewis HS next week. It was an emotional homecoming, and it was wonderful seeing our school cheer on the Class of 2023 as they walked the halls one final time as FCPS students. Many of our staff taught these students, and it was especially heartwarming to see how proud our staff was of this exceptional group of young people. It’s hard to believe that our school year is winding down, and our 8th graders will be moving into high school in just a few short weeks!

We have a lot of positive things planned next week as we close out the year. Two things for you to keep in mind: we are collecting student laptops on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. We are also asking that students don’t bring backpacks on Thursday or Friday. Teachers have activities planned that won’t require typical school supplies, so students won’t need their backpacks. Stay tuned for more information about additional programs next week, including student presentations, award ceremonies, and Last Day of School festivities!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Principal, Key Middle School

Lunch Balances

🥗 Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!

It’s a busy time of year, and we know there are many priorities on families’ plates. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important for families to remember to check their students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families who earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2023-24 school year will be available near the end of August.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2022-23 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price lunch.

If you are interested in helping to relieve lunch debt for families currently going through the FRM application process, please donate to Educate Fairfax.

Health Room Medication

Parent or Guardian:

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over the counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by your health care provider. Approved over-the-counter medications given for headaches, muscle aches, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps do not need a health care provider’s signature. Antibiotic or antiviral medications for 10 consecutive school days or less do not require a health care provider’s signature either. For all asthma medications, a Virginia Asthma Action Plan must be provided. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form(s).

Over-the-counter medication must be in the unopened original container and clearly labeled by the parent or guardian. No more than 100 pills/tablets of OTC medication should be brought to school at a time. All prescription medication, including samples, must be labeled by the pharmacist or health care provider. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time to be given.

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student, their medication. If you have any questions, please contact your school health room aide, at 703-313-3910.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Middle School Sports

🏃‍♀️ Middle School Athletics Coming This Fall

FCPS has designated funding in the budget for 2023-24 for middle school spring and fall athletic activities to support student well-being at no cost to students. Pending budget adoption, this will be the first time FCPS has offered middle school students a chance to participate in extracurricular sports programs.

Middle schools will start with cross country this fall. Track will follow in spring 2024.

Any middle school students who would like to participate in athletics will need to have a Virginia High School League (VHSL) pre-participation examination (PPE). The physical exam form must be completed and signed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant. Fairfax County public high schools will offer PPEs at a cost of $50 per student through June 17. Students who receive free or reduced meals are eligible to receive an exam at no cost. Learn more about PPE and middle school athletics.

Update Contact Information in weCare@School

Within SIS ParentVUE, Fairfax County Public Schools provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system. weCare helps manage contact and emergency medical information by allowing parents/caregivers to enter and update their children’s data online.

That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive critical updates from the district and their child’s school through the eNotify system. FCPS uses eNotify to communicate emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closing and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent by email, text, and occasionally by phone.

Away for the Day

Students will not be permitted to use their cell phones, earbuds, AirPods, smart watches, and other similar devices during the instructional day from 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Phones must be silenced and kept away for the duration of the school day.

We are also implementing the Away for the Day procedure during our after school program from 2:15pm - 4:30pm. We want our students to fully engage during their time after school.

If a device is confiscated, an adult family member or guardian will need to pick up the device from the school. Confiscated devices will not be returned to the student.

Expectations have been emphasized with all students during opening week.

Thank you for your support and partnership.
