FCPS School Year Calendar for 2022-23 https://www.fcps.edu/calendars/standard-school-year-calendar/2022-23-school-year-calendar

Dear Parents,

We had a very busy week! We enjoyed listening to the strings and chorus concerts this week. We are also looking forward to ending this last week of school strong with Field Day, Sixth Grade Farewell and other grade level activities. Note that we have changed the venue for the Sixth Grade Farewell. As we finalize the details, please note that students should be dropped off at 5:30 p.m. and the farewell ceremony will start at 6 p.m.  Specific information to follow on Monday.

Students in grade 3 will be introduced to the various strings instruments in order for them to identify an instrument to rent for the next school year. We typically have the majority of 4th graders participate in strings.  Here is the google link to sign up and more information is below.  Rising 5th graders and 6th graders can also sign up for band or strings. The current fourth graders will be introduced to the various band instruments. They can choose to remain in strings or choose a new instrument and join band. A google form will be created for chorus soon. Rising fifth and sixth graders are offered this opportunity!

Field Day is coming up!  See the note below from the PTA for supporting with tents and other items.  Thanks in advance for your support.

Our wonderful Tracy Dean is retiring! She will be dearly missed. Please do pop by the office and say good bye to her! We sincerely thank her for her work and dedication to Kent Gardens!

The following staff members are also leaving due to moves and pursuing other opportunities outside of FCPS: Mrs. Mooney, Dr. Mays, Mrs. Ogren, Ms. Schneider, and Mrs. Crawford. Mrs. Davis is taking a year off to support her family. Ms. Joseph has also decided to step out of the special education position and will be returning to Kent Gardens but in a different position.  We are excited to have experienced FCPS teachers come to Kent Gardens as well as a few new teachers, who always add great energy! Last but not least, Ms. Hawkins is back! We are excited to have her return!

Yearbooks should be incoming to families through the mail.  We do not have yearbooks for sale in the office.  The yearbooks look wonderful!  Thanks to Ms. Kladler and Ms. Leavitt for supporting!

Warmly,

Holly McGuigan              Sarah Talley                     Tia Hawkins

Notes from the KG Clinic

All medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school on June 16th. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online.  A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear.

Band and Strings Sign Up for 2023-24 School Year - Rising 4th, 5th and 6th Grade Students

We are excited about another fabulous year of band and strings!! We will introduce students to the instruments in the next month during the end of year concerts. If you know that your child will continue in band or strings or is planning on participating, please do complete the google form now. Most students play an instrument in grades 4 - 6.

Strings is offered to students in grades 4 - 6. As 4th grade is the initial entry, we typically have over 95% participation.  Anita Su, asu@fcps.edu, and Ahnika Emery, aremery@fcps.edu, are amazing instructors and available for questions. They will be introducing the various strings instruments – viola, violin, cello and bass to the rising 4th graders.  Playing a strings instrument is a wonderful start to beginning or continuing a musical experience! Note that we do differentiate!   Sign up here!

Band is offered to students in grades five and six. Band instruction begins in 5th grade. Students who participated in strings in the fourth grade either stay with the strings instruction or explore a new instrument in band. We have Mr. Brad Zimmerman, an amazing experienced FCPS band instructor, bszimmerman@fcps.and Mr. Sam Gurian, sigurian@fcps.edu. They will introduce the various wind, brass and percussion instruments in the next few weeks. Here is the link to sign up now. You are welcome to reach out to the instructors or the school administration team with questions.

Summer Technology Resources for Students

Students will continue to have access to the many programs available on the Kent Gardens website Student Links/Digital Resources page over the summer, including Reflex Math. Please be aware of times where intermittent interruptions may occur for updates and maintenance. In addition, student access to many of our FCPS programs will continue to be available over the summer. These include MyOn, and PebbleGo, as well as Clever programs such as Wixie, and ST Math. Note that Lexia will not be available due to supports that maybe needed. Students may make use of their fcpsschools.net Google accounts, including any content saved in their Google Drive as long as they remain a student in FCPS.

We highly encourage that you use Reflex Math routinely over the summer. Note that Reflex Math is available to students in grades 3 - 6. This practice will help your student keep up their numeracy skills. We also encourage reading daily throughout the summer.

SCHOOL TOOLBOX SUPPLY ORDERING

We're once again teaming up with School Toolbox to make school supply ordering easy for our families.

Boxes ship directly to home, and families can bring them to the Open House in August so kids don't need to worry about bringing supplies in with them the first day of school.   We recommend ordering by August 4th to ensure proper delivery times.

Click here to view to Kent Gardens page on their website.
