Axolotl AirBnB Request

ax

As you know the STEAM room has a pair of Axolotls named Crystal and Rocky (Aka The Rock). They have been doing well this school year and are looking to spend some time with their favorite Wakefield Forest STEAM students. If your family would like to watch them all summer or part of the summer, please kindly fill out this google form: https://forms.gle/WXKArXtNHb93s85u5

We are looking for a family or two (that is not going anywhere over the summer break for more than a long weekend as they can go three to four days) to watch the pair of Axolotls in their AirBnB household. The family must be willing to:

  1. Hand feed dried shrimp (with a tweezer) to Crystal and Rocky daily.  They are trained now so if you tap on glass and move the shrimp likes its moving they will track their prey and eat it.  They typically eat 3-5 shrimp at a time.  Please gently smush the shrimp so that it is softer when they eat it.
  2. Monitor tank temperature (must be around 60 degrees and have a small fan that runs to keep it cool).
  3. Monitor to make sure fans and bubblers are operating correctly,
  4. Resist temptation from touching the Axolotls.

Mr. Gray will give you the tank, water and all materials related to watching the Axolotls successfully.

If you are interested in hosting our Axolotls at your AirBNB please fill out the goggle form https://forms.gle/WXKArXtNHb93s85u5  by Monday, 6/12/23. Mr. Gray will contact you if your family is selected.

WFES Summer Reading

Owl with Books

Wakefield Forest is sponsoring a summer reading program.  To fulfill the summer reading requirements, students are encouraged to read at least 5 books and complete a reading log.  Students may read books from home, books from the public library, or books online including from MyOn, TumbleBooks, Pebble Go, and the WFES Virtual Library.

In addition, Barnes and Noble, Pizza Hut, and the Fairfax County Public Libraries are also sponsoring Summer Reading programs.  Reading students do for one program can count for all programs—just be sure to write the titles read the attached log.

Students who turn in a completed Summer Reading log with a family member’s signature to their teacher no later than Thursday, August 31, 2023  will be eligible to win a $5 gift certificate to the Wakefield Forest Fall Book Fair.  Two students per class will be randomly chosen for this prize.

Information packets and reading logs will be coming home with your child on Thursday, June 15 and will also be available in the Wakefield Forest—Summer Reading Program Schoology course your child will automatically be enrolled in.

Technology Collection

Laptop

We will be collecting student laptops for reimaging over the summer, unless the students are participating in a summer program. Over the summer laptops are cleaned and prepared for the new school year.

If your child has lost their laptop or charger, please notify the classroom teacher so we can coordinate for reimbursement.

WFES Buddy Program

Would you like to help welcome new families to Wakefield Forest Elementary School by being part of the Buddy Program for SY2023-2024?

What does it mean to be a Buddy Family? This summer, the PTA will match you (current WFES families) up with a new student and their family to help answer any questions they may have before starting school. If you can, you will meet in person before school starts to give the new student an opportunity to meet a new friend and have a familiar face to help them navigate the ins and outs of Wakefield Forest Elementary. You'll also be invited to help welcome new families at New Student Orientation in late August (exact details tbd). The buddy program is an easy way to help ensure our new families feel connected and welcomed to WFES.

If you are interested in becoming a Buddy Family, please send an email to Rebecca Gudicello at rebeccagudicello@gmail.com with the name of your student and their grade level for the 2023/2024 school year. Please sign up by July 1, 2023. We hope that you will join us for one of the most rewarding programs at WFES!!

End of Year - Meds to be Picked Up

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than Friday, June 16th at 1:30 PM. Medication left in the health room after Friday, June 16th at 1:30 PM will be destroyed. It is Health Department policy that medications be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. Please contact Stephanie McNamara in the health room @ 703-503-2310 if you have questions.

Summer Mental Health Support

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 26 to August 4. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.

All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Consultations can be requested online or by calling 703-503-2520 and leaving a message.

Lost and Found

Please visit our lost and found inside of door #1 by the main office for any items your child may be missing. Small items (jewelry, watches, ear buds, military medals, key fobs, glasses, etc) can be found in the front office. All unclaimed items will be donated at the end of the school year.

Project Neptune

On Wednesday, May 31, at 1:30pm, Ms. Massetti's first grade class participated in a live Zoom call with Dr. Joe Dituri, also known as Dr. Deep Sea. Dituri is part of the Project Neptune 100 undersea mission and ocean conservation outreach project. Dr. Dituri is researching the effects of living underwater for 100 days. He broke the record for longest time in an underwater facility set back in in 2014. You can learn more about the project at https://www.mrdf.org/project-neptune.  Dr. Dituri captured the first grader's imagination while working on a STEAM project to design an underwater house. The news came out that Dr. Deep Sea had broken the record for longest time living underwater at exactly the same time as their project began to design an underwater house. Their STEAM teachers decided to contact the Marine Resources Development Foundation, and the 22 first grade students were part of history!
