Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon Woodson Families:

Congratulations to the Class of 2023! I want to give a huge thank you to the graduation committee who planned this exciting event!

To our parent and staff volunteers for Cav Cruise… BRAVO!  Well done and thank you for providing a safe celebration for our graduates.

Underclass families, please review the end of year checklist (see #2) to make sure all laptops and textbooks/library books are returned before the summer break.

Please remain connected over the summer via the school website and look for special issues of this newsletter as well as Schoology messages.

I look forward to welcoming the class of ‘27 for our Freshman Academy this August (see #18). Please tell your friends and neighbors to register so we can connect with our newest Cavaliers.

Enjoy your last week; remember every day next week has an early release. We look forward to seeing our Cavs back in August.

Be well, Cavs!

4. Lost and Found

Your student's stuff is missing them!!! The Lost and Found is overflowing with water bottles, lunch bags, and winter coats/sweatshirts.

Please ask in the Main Office to visit the Lost and Found before Friday, June 16th to claim any missing items.

5. FCPS Student Laptop Collection

We are required to collect EACH student’s FCPS-assigned laptop and charger at the end of each school year. We will reimage each laptop this summer and students will receive a laptop back in the fall.

If your student is participating in an FCPS approved summer program (ESY, credit recovery, etc.), they may keep their laptop and charger, but need to let their school counselor and the Woodson TechTeam know.  Please email WoodsonTechTeam@fcps.edu.

Guidelines for the collection of laptops:

  • All students returning to Woodson HS must complete the following steps before turning in their laptops. ALL local files and bookmarks must be backed up. You will be getting a new device next year.
  • Laptops must be returned free of stickers, markings, and other drawings.
  • Students should turn in their laptop and charging cord. Students should keep their case; we will not collect cases from students, nor will a new one be provided in the fall to returning students.
  • If a student lost their laptop or their laptop cord, they should go to MySchoolBucks to pay for a replacement. Non-FCPSOn chargers will NOT be accepted, and students will need to pay for the missing charger. Students should bring a paper receipt from MySchoolBucks with them when they come to the laptop collection.
  • Students will receive a paper receipt when they turn in their equipment.

Collection Dates & Times

Wednesday-Thursday, June 14th-15th - 9:40-11:15am Cav Hall

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than dismissal time on Friday, June 16th. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.

It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian, however, with parent or guardian written permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the health room.

If you have any questions, please contact the School Health Aide Celeste Delahunty at 703-503-4610 or cdelahunty@fcps.edu or the Public Health Nurse Amanda Yanchus at ayanchus@fcps.edu.

7. Woodson Sports Physical Night - Wednesday, June 14th

Woodson Athletic Trainers

Every year, the Woodson Athletic Training Program hosts a Sports Physical Night. The goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the following school year. Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. The price will be $50 as it has been in previous years.

If you are interested, please sign up for an appointment slot here

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu.

11. Mental Wellness Summer Supports

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 26 to August 4. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.

All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Consultations can be requested online or by calling 703-503-2520 and leaving a message.

12. Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy Services

Teletherapy services will continue to be available for all FCPS high school students at no cost this summer. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hazel’s highly-qualified therapists specialize in speaking “teen.”

14. Digital PSAT Replaces Paper in Fall 2023

This October, the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) will be administered in Fairfax County in a digital format. Some testing accommodations are administered differently for digital tests than for paper/pencil tests. See information about accommodations for students with disabilities.

PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day

The district will offer access to the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day for rising 10th through 12th grade students at no cost to families. Exams will be held at each high school on Wednesday, October 11th.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities and English Learners

Because these exams are operated by the College Board, students do not automatically receive testing accommodations or supports. If you have a student with disabilities entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade; or have an English Learner (EL) student entering 12th grade; please review the accommodations request process and/or EL support request process and return forms to Kathleen Crosson (kpcrosson@fcps.edu) by Tuesday, August 8th.
