Exciting News for Next Year! Outdoor Garden Learning and STEAM!

Churchill Road Garden

Over the past few days, we have been planting vegetables, flowers and herbs in our gardens!  Our students learned from FCPS Get2Green staff how to use gardening tools, how to make seed starter pots out of newspaper, how deep to dig the holes for the seedlings, and then the students “planted” away!  Kindergarteners in particular will be excited to see their pumpkins grow in the fall!  Thank you to the many parent volunteers who came to support and engage in our learning yesterday!  We are grateful to Wheat's Landscape for their help in getting our raised beds ready for our students.

We will need some families to help with the gardens this summer!  At the end of the email you will find ways your family could help us keep our garden growing throughout the summer!

STEAM Next Year

We are excited to announce that next year we have hired a STEAM teacher.  Mrs. Asta-Dianne Clark will be teaching all students K-6, as well as facilitating our outdoor learning spaces including the gardens.  She recently received her Master’s degree in Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning, with a specialization in STEM, and has been engaging her kindergarten students in STEAM activities. Mrs. Clark can't wait to spark a love of learning with all Churchill Road students through research-based, progressive practices for teaching science, technology, engineering and math in the classroom - indoor and outdoor! Yesterday was her first outdoor lesson using our beautiful raised beds.  She is continuing to meet with other STEAM teachers and with the FCPS STEAM office to plan engaging STEAM experiences for all of our students next year.

We wanted to share this exciting news as we know this is something as a community we have been looking forward to!

From the PTA….Join the CRS Garden Team!

Are you looking for something fun and different to do with your family?  Get some great bonding time outside away from screens, build on your children’s science education, and give back to the community by volunteering to help in our CRS garden. Our CRS Kindergarten, first and second grade students were busy planting seedlings this week and now we need your help! Throughout the Summer CRS families volunteer for one week each to help keep the gardens watered and growing.  It’s really easy – no gardening experience required, just a “watering” can-do attitude!  The hoses are right there, and we will walk you through what to do when your week begins.

All produce grown in the CRS Garden is harvested and donated to the SHARE of McLean food bank.
