Check out what's been happening at Hayfield!
Alexandria, VA, May 1, 2023 – Sydney Wong from Hayfield Secondary School has been selected for a 2023 Achievement Award in Writing, given by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. Only students who are juniors may participate. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate students for the writing program.
Five Future Business Leaders of America Students were given the opportunity to get outside of the classroom and tour the White House, Sterne Kessler Patent Law Firm and the World Bank. Sterne Kessler spent time explaining a day in the life in the business world as well as the perks of working in the office as they had an on-site barista and daily lunches for their employees.
Class of 2023 students had an idea for a new senior mural to brighten up the main lobby. The idea for the mural is to have the Class of 2023 dedicate the brick space under the stairs to become the "Senior Wall". In creating a new tradition, the students' plan is for each year's current senior class to have the opportunity to design a mural that gives all seniors an opportunity to participate in the tradition.
The inaugural Class of 2023 mural includes the handprints of all seniors who wanted to participate, in order to celebrate the close of their time here at Hayfield. One thing is for sure, the Class of 2023 has left their mark at Hayfield! Congratulations to our upcoming graduates!

Four Future Business Leaders of America Students were invited along with Miss Mutscheller to attend the Aim High Launch at Capitol One Complex in Tyson’s Corner. During this event, students were able to listen to 3 businesses including Deltek, Capitol One, and CGI as they discussed internships and the future of connecting our classrooms to businesses through the Northern Virginia Technology Council. Aim High is bringing together community partners through Northern Virginia Community College to provide countless opportunities to our students. Speakers at this launch included but are not limited to FCPS’s Superintendent Dr. Reid, The Chief Information and Technology Officer Mr. Sethi, and previous FCPS students. |
Future Business Leaders of America hosted a Young Entrepreneur Expo in our cafeteria to promote students ages K – 12 and their small businesses. Students at this event sold their services and products throughout the day while networking. Before the students arrived, over 40 local businesses spent time networking and talking about ways to help our students in their businesses. Businesses then circulated the room to provide feedback to over 50 young entrepreneurs. This annual event will continue to provide many opportunities for all students in FCPS and their small businesses.

For the past few years, seniors have been given the opportunity to paint a rock with their post-Hayfield plans to be displayed in the stadium. As this year winds down and graduation gets closer, seniors have been turning in their painted rocks to add to the beautiful Senior Rock Garden for all to see.
Check out some awesome rocks that have been turned in so far! Our Hawks are amazing!

Our Hayfield VA STAR students continue to work on refurbishing laptops to provide to our community. In the month of May, our students were able to sit down and teach some of our English as a Second Language families on how to set up their laptops. In addition to talking about computers, students were able to have dinner and sit down to learn about those within our community. This act of service learning provides students with an appreciation for their community and their hard work within the classroom. |
