Graduation Day Schedule

Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon Woodson,

Tuesday we celebrate the Class of 2023!  This milestone is thirteen years in the making for our seniors! I invite anyone to come to EagleBank Arena at George Mason University. Graduation is on Tuesday, June 6th at 7:30pm and there are no tickets required. Grades 9-11, please make sure you review the schedule for June 6th as it is very different from any other day of the year.

On Monday, June 5th, our ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students will participate in a 90-minute assembly, “Silent No More: Opioid Edition,” where they will hear from a panel of experts around the invisible dangers of opioids, like fentanyl, and many other drugs. Our schedule will be adjusted for the day (2nd, 6th, 4th, 8th) so students will not miss instruction during this presentation. “Silent No More: Opioid Edition” is a program developed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Students will hear important information from health experts, a DEA agent, a federal prosecutor, and those that have been personally touched by this national epidemic that has reached Fairfax.

Your student will hear stories from family members who have lost loved ones to unintentional overdoses, as well as young people who suffered from substance use disorder (commonly known as addiction) themselves. They will be educated on what these dangerous drugs look like, how deadly fentanyl is, and how it is being used to make “fake” pills being sold on the street as legally prescribed medication. The medical professionals will explain the science behind addiction, and the relationship between mental health and substance use disorder. This group will also have community resources available relating to drug services.

With only ten days of school year remaining, please check SIS to see where your child stands in classes. Be sure to get remaining work in and check with teachers if you have any questions.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dr. Floyd
Principal

5. FCPS Student Laptop Collection

We are required to collect EACH student’s FCPS-assigned laptop and charger at the end of each school year. We will reimage each laptop this summer and students will receive a laptop back in the fall.

If your student is participating in an FCPS approved summer program (ESY, credit recovery, etc.), they may keep their laptop and charger, but need to let their school counselor and the Woodson TechTeam know.  Please email WoodsonTechTeam@fcps.edu.

Guidelines for the collection of laptops:

  • All students returning to Woodson HS must complete the following steps before turning in their laptops. ALL local files and bookmarks must be backed up. You will be getting a new device next year.
  • Laptops must be returned free of stickers, markings, and other drawings.
  • Students should turn in their laptop and charging cord. Students should keep their case; we will not collect cases from students, nor will a new one be provided in the fall to returning students.
  • If a student lost their laptop or their laptop cord, they should go to MySchoolBucks to pay for a replacement. Non-FCPSOn chargers will NOT be accepted, and students will need to pay for the missing charger. Students should bring a paper receipt from MySchoolBucks with them when they come to the laptop collection.
  • Students will receive a paper receipt when they turn in their equipment.

Collection Dates & Times

Wednesday-Thursday, June 14th-15th - 9:40-11:15am Cav Hall

**Sessions are scheduled one at a time. Future session dates have not yet been announced. There will be another announcement when the next session is available for booking.**

If you have any questions please email seniors@vosphoto.com

7. Immunization Requirements for Rising Seniors

The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

All students entering twelfth grade will be required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school.

Twelfth grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.

Please provide one of the following documents to  Casey Delaney at cdelaney@fcps.edu as soon as possible:

  1. An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine.
  2. A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given.
  3. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  4. A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online

Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/immunization/school or by calling 703-246-2411.

Please contact Casey Delaney at cdelaney@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

8. Counselor Corner

Junior Focus Day

On May 18th, Student Services successfully hosted Woodson’s first annual Junior Focus Day. This three-hour program was designed to educate Juniors on post-secondary opportunities. Students were able to attend sessions regarding a variety of topics including: college essay writing, military careers, college application & admission guidance, information on trade & industrial careers, and many more. We were excited to have numerous community members, parents, and staff contribute to this event and look forward to growing the program next year!

Attendance Matters

As the end of the school year rapidly approaches, students should be reminded that attendance really does matter, and it can have a significant impact on final grades --- positive or negative. Please encourage your student to be here the final two weeks and finish out the year strongly!

Registering for Summer Classes – Deadlines

Please be aware that deadlines for summer learning opportunities are quickly approaching.  Information on all summer learning opportunities can be found here.

Deadline to register for FCPS Summer School Online Campus: Friday, June 9

Final Exam Schedule for Underclass Students

9. Woodson Sports Physical Night - Wednesday, June 14th

Woodson Athletic Trainers

Every year, the Woodson Athletic Training Program hosts a Sports Physical Night. The goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the following school year. Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. The price will be $50 as it has been in previous years. Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s ONLY fundraiser for the year as we DO NOT receive any funding from the county. ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes.   If you are interested, please sign up for an appointment slot here

As always, if you cannot make the it to our night on the 14th, but still want to support FCPS, feel free to sign up for another school's event! Every school will host (or co-host) their own night. (We promise we won't be mad).

Want to Volunteer??

We are always looking for physicians and HCP's to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well other HCP’s comfortable with taking vital signs. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. You can sign up here

If you can’t make it, but you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word and sign up sheet! If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu.
