Churchill Chatter - Issue 21, May 26, 2023

Dear Churchill Road Families,

We hope everyone enjoys the upcoming long weekend! Happy Memorial Day!

What a great week of events at Churchill Road. Our 2nd grade students performed their grade level play, and our Band students performed for a standing room only concert!  It was such a joy to see everyone and see our students shine!

Over the next few weeks, we are excited for many year-end activities. Please join us on Monday, June 5th for our Strings Concert at 6:00 PM. Additionally, we will have a Chorus Concert on Wednesday, June 7th at 6:00 PM. We can't wait to see and hear all the hard work our students put in throughout the school year!

Only a few more weeks!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Pierson-Barr, Principal

Ms. Niccolls, Assistant Principal

Field Day June 13 - Volunteers Needed

We need parent volunteers on Tuesday, June 13th for our Pixar Movie Field Day!  Volunteer for a 2.5-hour block in the morning or afternoon.  Responsibilities are easy and fun!  Sign Up Here! Details of time and grade levels are below:

Field day is divided into an AM block for grades 4-6 and a PM block for grades K-3.  We will need parent volunteers to assist at each specific station.

  • The AM block (Grades 4-6) commitment time is from 8:30 AM - 11:00 AM.
  • The PM block (Grades K-3) is from 12:30 PM -2:45 PM.

Please contact Mr. Varhol at byvarhol@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

Thank you very much for your help!  We look forward to a fun and active day!

Churchill Road Food Drive

The Churchill Road PTA is helping fight food insecurity in our area. Starting May 24th, we will be collecting non-perishable, shelf-stable food donations. These donations will be assembled into weekend meal bags for northern Virginia school children who rely on free and reduced lunches during the week.

Food Drive: It is important each child’s meal bag is identical.  To ensure these bags have the correct type and number of items needed, we’ve created a sign-up form for donations.  Your children can bring your donations to school and drop them in the grey bins located throughout the school. You can also have items shipped directly to the school.

Food drive runs May 24th – June 2nd

Meal Bag Assembly (2nd and 5th grades): We’ll be assembling these weekend meal bags on June 8th.  Please note this event is capped at the first 15 2nd graders and 25 5th graders.  Look for permission slips in this week’s VIP folder!  2nd and 5th graders MUST have a signed permission slip to participate.

Parent Volunteers: Finally – we need parent volunteers to help us make this event work! Want to join your student in the assembly on June 8th? Join us! Don’t have a 2nd or 5th grader but would love to pitch in? You’re also welcome!

Sign up for parent volunteering here: https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/20f0849acab28a1fe3-helping1/25404333

Student Health Room Medication Pickup

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time (1:20 PM) on the last day of school (June 16, 2023).  Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.  It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian.  Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services.   Look for more detailed information on the back of the medication authorization form.

If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program.  Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her medication.  If you have any questions, please contact your school health room aide, at 703-288-8410, or your school public health nurse, Brenda Nave RN at 571-587-2605.

End of Year Library Reminders

As we get closer to the end of the school year, it is important that students find and return all Churchill Road ES Library books that they have checked out.  Students can find out what library books they have checked out by visiting the Library Catalog and logging into their library account using their school google account (fcpsschools.net).  You can also email our librarian, Ashley Scott, to find out how many books your child has checked out or to ask any other library-related questions: akscott@fcps.edu.

  • Thursday, June 1, is the last day for all students to check out books for the school year.
  • All library books are due on or before Friday, June 2.  Thank you!
