Staff Spotlight of the Week
Hello Cameron Families!
My name is Megan Rathbone and I have been teaching 4th grade at Cameron for 6 years. This is my 13th year teaching, and one of my favorite moments in my teaching day continues to be reading books aloud. I love doing different voices for the characters and inspiring students to pick out different books at the library. Outside of school I enjoy supporting my daughter's girl scout troop as the cookie mom and a camp volunteer. I love to be outdoors hiking, running, and exploring National Parks or watching a Nationals baseball game in DC.

Katie, a 3rd grader, was Principal for the Day on Wednesday! Students who attend school every day during the week will be entered into a raffle for the chance to be Mr. Johson's side-kick.

Variety Show!
It is exciting to announce, Cameron Elementary School will host a Variety Show on Monday, June Cameron 12th. It will be held in the gym between 9:50 and 11:00 a.m. The Variety Show is voluntary, and if students are interested, they may audition for a spot.
The auditions will occur on June 6, 7, and 8. A schedule will be worked out by the general music teachers and coordinated with the classroom teachers. Auditions will take place during school hours.
Students are encouraged to be creative and try to think of unique acts. Also, it is important that students be prepared when coming to the audition. If you have any questions concerning the Variety Show, you may contact Ms. Toney at wetoney@fcps.edu or call the school. Parents are welcome to attend the Variety Show!

Health Room Medication
The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).
Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over the counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by your health care provider. Approved over-the-counter medications given for headaches, muscle aches, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps do not need a health care provider’s signature. Antibiotic or antiviral medications for 10 consecutive school days or less do not require a health care provider’s signature either. For all asthma medications, a Virginia Asthma Action Plan must be provided. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form(s).
Over-the-counter medication must be in the unopened original container and clearly labeled by the parent or guardian. No more than 100 pills/tablets of OTC medication should be brought to school at a time. All prescription medication, including samples, must be labeled by the pharmacist or health care provider. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time to be given.

Throughout the year, the Family Center offers several in-person and online Webinars. Just to mention a couple; ST MATH, SETTING THE STAGE FOR SUMMER SUCCESS, KINDERGARTEN, WHAT EVERY FAMILY NEEDS TO KNOW, and many more. Please follow the link for information and enrolment.
THE LIBRARY
Although the Family Center is in Dunn Loring, our families can choose a book online, and the book will be sent to the school for the family to pick it up, and they can return it to school.

The Family Resource Center offers free, confidential consultations in person or via videoconference and phone calls. They can brainstorm solutions and strategies for your concerns. You can request this service at this link.

✅Student Testing Results Coming Soon
Starting in late May, caregivers will receive reports for assessments their students completed this spring. Not sure what assessments your student took this year? A list of tests by grade level is available. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE, by mail, or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines.
Some families will also receive a Virginia’s Visualization and Analytics Solution (VVAAS) Student Assessment Summary report with historical Standards of Learning (SOL) test results from 2015-2022.

How to Support Your Child’s Success
If you do not already have a SIS ParentVUE account, sign up now to monitor and support your child’s academic success! Through ParentVUE, you are able to view your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. You can also access special reports for your student like progress reports and assessment score reports.
Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE by using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Understanding the Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day
Memorial Day and Veterans Day are often confused for one another and can be easily misunderstood. Both are patriotic holidays that honor the military community; however, these two federal holidays couldn’t be more different. As we near Memorial Day, let’s take a moment to take a closer look at the difference and why we celebrate Memorial Day.
Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the last Monday in May, honors service members who have died in military service to the nation. Originally known as “Decoration Day,” when citizens were encouraged to create memorials on soldiers' graves with flags and flowers, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968 which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May.
Conversely, Veterans Day, a federal holiday which falls on November 11, is designated as a day to honor those who have served in the U.S. military.
Today, Memorial Day is often associated with the start of summer. On May 29, 2023, take a moment to pay tribute to the fallen while still enjoying time with family and friends and the outdoors. Here are a few ideas to commemorate Memorial Day:
