May Newsletter for Parents

Dear Providence families,

We’ve arrived at the last few weeks of school! This is an exciting time of year with lots of end of year events happening—concerts, promotion ceremony, field day and classroom celebrations. We also recognize the end of the school year can at times come with a mixture of emotions. Our staff strive to ensure that all of the remaining days are filled with engaging learning activities and consistent routines and structures.

We’re looking forward to a great end of the school year!

Sincerely,

Mr. Pratt, Ms. Kelleher, Ms. Hickey and Ms. Suitte

AVID at Providence

This school year was Providence’s first year as an AVID Elementary school.

What is AVID Elementary?AVID Elementary is a foundational component of the AVID College Readiness System and supports AVID's mission to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.

What does AVID look like at the elementary level?Students engage with WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and critical reading) strategies throughout each day. These teaching and learning strategies support students in comprehending concepts and articulating ideas at increasingly complex levels. On an exciting note -  Fairfax City schools are the only schools currently offering AVID K-12 in all of FCPS.

For more information, please contact Tania Dedham tddedham@fcps.edu.

Note from the FCPS Health Department

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Immunization Letter for Rising Seventh Grade Students
Virginia state law requires the Virginia Department of Health to provide the parents and/or guardians of rising seventh grade students with information on human papillomavirus (HPV) and the human papillomavirus vaccine. The human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) prevents six types of cancer, including cervical cancer and certain head and neck cancers. Boys and girls should receive the vaccine when they are 11-12 years old.

Effective July 1, 2021, a complete series of two doses of HPV vaccine is required for all students entering the seventh grade. The first dose shall be administered before the student enters the seventh grade. Parents/guardians, at their sole discretion, may elect for their student not to receive the HPV immunization.

Annually, the Virginia Department of Health and the Commissioner of Health provide HPV vaccine information located at the following sites:

Medication Pick Up

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site  on  the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

News from The City of Fairfax

Jermantown Road Corridor Improvements Project
Your Attendance is Requested- Fairfax City seeks your input on preliminary design concepts for the Jermantown Road Corridor Improvements Project. An open house is slated from 7-9 p.m. May 31 at Katherine Johnson Middle School, 3801 Jermantown Rd. Work on this project began in 2018 when the city engaged a consulting engineer to develop a concept plan. The city received $21M in NVTA funding in 2019 for this project.

The concept planning suggested that the project focus on:

  1. Spot widening
  2. Implementing multimodal features to improve walking, biking, and access to bus stops; and
  3. Consolidating driveways where possible.

Jermantown Road provides access to residential areas, two schools, multiple commercial locations, and connects to Fairfax County. Current conditions are challenging for some users, and accommodating future growth and changes will require improvements.

On May 9, the mayor and City Council held a work session on the project with the Transportation Division; click here to watch the work session. Also, you may visit the Meetings page to download related documents and information.
