Franklin MS Weekly Update - June 2

Franklin Families and Students,

Good afternoon! We have entered the final weeks of the school year and it is hard to believe that there are only 10 days left. There is so much to celebrate at this time of year and I am incredibly proud of every one of our students!

I wanted to take this opportunity to share a few Congratulations, Bravos, and Good Lucks!

  • Congratulations to all of the Franklin musicians who performed in their Spring Concerts during the last week. Our Chorus, Band, and Orchestra students all had outstanding concerts. The music they created with exciting, expressive, and impressive. We would also like to thank their outstanding teachers, Mr. Polendy, Mrs. O’Connell, and Mr. Hill, for all of their hard work and dedication.
  • Bravo! to the cast and crew of our upcoming production of Into the Woods, Jr. at Franklin MS. Opening night is tonight and we can’t wait to see these talented students on stage and behind the scenes. There are four performances this weekend and information about purchasing tickets can be found below. Thank you to Ms. Hoffman and Ms. Bridenbaugh for leading our student actors this Spring.
  • Good Luck to all of the former Franklin Falcons who will be graduating from high school this week. I am excited to attend the graduation ceremonies for Chantilly on Wednesday and Oakton on Friday. We are very proud of your accomplishments as former Falcons and we can’t wait to see where you soar to next.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Best wishes for an enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

8th Grade End of Year Celebration Update

Our 8th graders are taking that next step in their education journey very soon, so we are going all out to make sure they have a great end to their middle school experience! Our PTA is hard at work planning an exciting celebration and they need YOUR help to make it happen! We currently have volunteer slots open for the 8th Grade End of Year Celebration on Wednesday, June 14. The slots are 1.25 - 2 hours and you can review the available spots on the Sign Up Genius and click on a button to sign up and help out. Please contact Heather Tomasek, our PTA President, with any questions. Thank you for your support.

Academic Career Plan

Each year, your child develops an Academic and Career Plan that supports their growth. This plan helps your child plan for their future.

Your child will work with teachers and school counselors to discover their personal strengths and interests. They will also create goals to help them achieve success, plan for courses that meet high school graduation requirements, and prepare for life after high school. The development of this plan starts in middle school. Students update their plans during high school as their goals evolve.

This plan supports on time graduation as well as college and career readiness. It is required by the Virginia Department of Education. Each student’s parent or guardian must review this plan at the end of 8th grade and again at the end of 10th grade. Then you can support them as they make decisions about college and careers that match their personal strengths, interests, and goals. There are many pathways to success!

You or your child can log into Naviance Student at www.fcps.edu/Naviance. Naviance supports more than 70 languages which parents can access from the icon of a globe in the top right corner of the website. Please review the following information together with your child:

  • Results of the strengths and career surveys
  • Personal, academic, and/or career goals
  • Resume • Draft course plans for high school

Once in your child’s account, click the “About Me” tab and scroll down to “Portfolio.” Once you click on the Portfolio, you can view all the work that your child has completed.

Once you have reviewed your child’s plan, complete the verification form at https://forms.gle/S3qzPJcWzsCJYmPU8. The completion of this form will serve as your signature. Please complete this form by Friday, June 30, 2023.

For more information visit www.FCPS.edu and search “Academic and Career Plan.” We encourage you to continue to use Naviance Student with your child to explore college and career options. If you have questions, please contact your child’s school counselor.

Franklin MS After School Program Information

The After School Program for the 2022 – 2023 school year has ended. We had a successful year and offered about 40 different activities. We hope your child was able to find an activity to enjoy. Thank you to all the students who participated!

We hope you will consider completing the parent survey about the Middle School After School Program. Please click here to complete the survey. The survey should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. The survey is an important component of the After School Program evaluation and is critical for future funding. The more responses we receive, the more valuable and reliable the data. The responses not only allow us to assess the impact of the after school program, but they help drive program improvement and program quality.

Student Testing Results Coming Soon

Starting in late May, caregivers will receive reports for assessments their students completed this spring. Not sure what assessments your student took this year? A list of tests by grade level is available. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE, by mail, or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Some families will also receive a Virginia’s Visualization and Analytics Solution (VVAAS) Student Assessment Summary report with historical Standards of Learning (SOL) test results from 2015-2022.

Please go online or contact your student's school for additional information about student assessments.

How to Support Your Child’s Success

If you do not already have a SIS ParentVUE account, sign up now to monitor and support your child’s academic success! Through ParentVUE, you are able to view your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. You can also access special reports for your student like progress reports and assessment score reports.

Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE by using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.

Medication Pickup

All medication(s) stored in the school health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school, Friday, June 16th at 12:15 PM. Medication left in the clinic will be disposed of after student dismissal. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. If you have any questions, please contact your School Health Aide, Donna Long at (703) 904-5110 or FranklinHealthRoom@fcps.edu.

Lost and Found

We have accumulated many misplaced items. Please encourage your student to check for their lost items in the lost and found area in the cafeteria before the end of the school year. At the end of the school day on Friday, June 16, any remaining items will be donated to a local charitable organization.
